Satanic Sermon
Satan is a word of such power that its utterance, especially
with strong emotion, frightens many people. Christianity
personified all that was adversarial to keeping the flock
submissive under one convenient name, choosing the Old Testament
Jehovah's hit man for the honor. Attributes such as babykilling,
murder, and mayhem were associated with Satan to draw the flock in
tighter so the good shepherds could have their way.
Satan, as an archetype, embodies pagan values that
Christianity did not assimilate, values that did not reinforce the
Christian effort to elevate weakness and stupidity as an ideal, the
idea that people need a cruel shepherd to protect them from
themselves. Values I associate with the Satanic archetype include
the natural instincts for comfort and survival, innovation, self
determination, doubt, and the desire for worldly, personal victory.
Satan reflects the gods and goddesses that were either demonized
or castrated to become saints. Satan represents the possibilities
of a future in which a natural order for humanity is realized, a
truly new order, born out of chaos as systems that no longer work
continue to break down. Satan is not, as the Christians preach,
a disembodied spirit roaming to and fro, but is the very essence
of self aware, antimystical, earth-generated flesh, with nature-
based instincts and appetites.
