The Morning Briefing -- Wednesday, September 7, 1994 SURVEY FINDS THE RADICAL RIGHT WIELDS SUBSTANTIAL INFLUENCE IN 31 STATE REPUBLICAN PARTIES The Radical Right is an increasingly powerful political movement that has "substantial" influence or "dominates" the Republican Party in 31 states, according to a state-by-state survey recently conducted by Campaigns & Elections, a non-partisan national journal for political professionals. For the survey, the magazine interviewed state party leaders, campaign activists, political consultants, news reporters, and university professors from all 50 states and the District of Columbia about the influence of "Christian Right" activists in state GOP organizations. Responses were confirmed and checked through additional in-depth interviewing to ensure balance, fairness, and accuracy. The Campaigns & Elections Survey shows that the Radical Right dominates or strongly influences state Republican organizations in 31 states. The 18 states that earned a "dominant" rating were: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. In addition, Radical Right strength was rated "substantial" in the 13 state Republican parties of Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Utah. Regionally, Radical Right strength is strongest across the South and the West, while the most limited in New England and the Northeast. If Radical Right influence continues to grow at the rate that it has in recent years, it would be possible that by 1996 many of the states now in the "substantial" category could roll into the "dominant" grouping. This would give the Radical Right dominance over a majority, or a near majority, of GOP state party decision structures. In states listed in the "dominant" category, Radical Right strength in GOP state party organizations constitute a working majority on major issues; those in the "substantial" category have a Radical Right influence between 25 percent but less than a majority; and those in the "minor" category have less than 25 percent influence. The survey is part of a special section to appear in the September issue of Campaigns & Elections, which will hit newsstands next week. CLINTON ADMINISTRATION DRIVES JOB CREATION In the last 19 months, 4.27 million new jobs have been created -- 93 percent (3.98 million) in the private sector. Nationally, manufacturing employment has now increased for 8 straight months for the first time in a decade. The unemployment rate held steady at 6.1 percent for the month of August.
