The eloquence of Robert G. Ingersoll in
three American Atheist Press reprints
******FAITH OR AGNOSTICISM:******
The Field-Ingersoll Discussion
Henry M. Field, a famous and powerful minister,
addressed "An Open Letter to Robert G. Ingersoll" in the
August 1887 edition of the _North American Review_. The
"Great Agnostic" replied in the January 1888 issue. What
resulted was one of the most important and widely publicized
religious controversies of the nineteenth century. The fight
was over evolution vs. creationism, the existence of evil in
the world, and the doctrine of free will. Ingersoll ably
defends the Atheist position on these ageless questions.
Paperback. 75 pages. #5168.
******THE GREAT INFIDELS******
by Robert G. Ingersoll
How often have you been asked, "What would the world be
like without religion?" Ingersoll answers this old chestnut
by pointing to the lives of a few great -- and nonreligious -
- men, including Julian, Bruno, Voltaire, Diderot, Hume,
Spinoza, Paine, Franklin, and Jefferson.
Paperback. 64 pages. #5197.
******INGERSOLL THE MAGNIFICENT******
Joseph Lewis, Editor
In 1957, Joseph Lewis, editor of the Atheist magazine
_The Age of Reason,_ decided to research all of the writings
of Robert Ingersoll to cull out his principal statements,
especially in respect to religion, and assemble them into a
single volume.
This is Lewis's selection divided into 24 chapters. Each
concerns a special subject that Ingersoll treated, including
"The Holy Bible," "Christianity," "The Gods," "Origin,
Design, and Destiny," "Myth and Miracle," "The Great
Infidels," and "The Natural and the Supernatural." These
essays have often been printed separately because of their
beauty and eloquence.
Ingersoll's was the most famous name on the lecture
circuits when this was an art known as elocution. And he
battered religion. His favored method of assault was to strip
the Bible down to its most absurd premises and the ministers
to their illogical positions. But he did all with the utmost
grace and elegance, politely cutting the Falwells of his day
to the quick.
Lewis has done an excellent job; this is Ingersoll at
his best, in a very easy to read, excerpted form.
Paperback. 342 pages. Stock #5216.
