The new bishop of Durham -- the fourth most powerful man in the Church of England -- is battling accusations that he is gay. It seems that 26 years ago, in 1968, Michael Turnbull was convicted of gross indecency with a make farmer in a public lavatory. At the time he was chaplain to the archbishop of York. Still he says, "I am not and never have been a homosexual. However this regrettable incident all those years ago taught me much about human frailty and fragility and about what is required of the ordained ministry." Turnbull has been an outspoken opponent of admitting homosexual priests to the Church of England and has said that gay priests would be "incompatible" with the ministry. He is now married and has three children.
