RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AFFECT WOMEN'S LIFESTYLES,
RESEARCHER CLAIMS
In a statement on Friday, September 30, Margaret Greet, a researcher
and professor of sociology at Ohio State University at Lima, claimed
that a woman's religious affiliation does affect her education and
childbearing. In a study involving 548 white women and 361 black women
between the ages of 35 and 39, Ms. Greer found that white women
belonging to conservative Christian sects are more likely to give birth
earlier and to recieve less education than white women in more liberal
denominations. No similar connection was found among black women.
Discussing the findings with UPI, Ms. Greer summarized, "We found the
more conservative white churches encourage women to see the most
important aspect of their future as being a wife and mother. Women who
view their life's role that way will become mothers earlier and they are
less likely to pursue higher education, because they don't foresee
needing it."
