PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Denny Smith, R-Ore., is
traveling to South Korea later this month to address a media
conference sponsored by a group linked to Rev. Sun Myung Moon's
Unification Church, according to a published report.
The Oregonian reported in its Friday editions that Smith will
receive $2,000 in addition to having his expenses paid for
attending a discussion on media and government relationships in
Seoul.
The conference is a yearly event organized by the World Media
Association, which is a non-profit arm of the Washington Times.
The newspaper is owned by News World Communications Inc., an arm
of the Unification Church.
The church has taken conservative stands on a number issues
and is devoted to combating communism.
This year's conference theme is "The Role of the Media in a
Divided World." The focus will be on the United States and Third
World countries.
"I have not been to Korea for years," Smith said. "I think it
is an important place in the world. When possible, I like to go
to these places."
Others scheduled to attend are former Navy Secretary John
Lehman; Jehan Sidat, widow of Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat; John
Silver, president of Boston University; and two other Republican
congressmen, Reps. Robert K Dornan of California and Dan Burton
of Indiana.
