Note: The years shown are for the program transmission dates,
      rather than recording years.  Much of the information was
      obtained or verified using Peter Haining's "Doctor Who: A
      Celebration" and "Doctor Who: 25 Glorious Years" and˙      various copies of "Doctor Who Magazine."  Many episodes of
      Doctor Who are unaccounted for, all from the program's˙      first six years and thus in black and white (a reason for˙      their loss due to BBC videotape archiving policy in the˙      early 1970's).  A number of Jon Pertwee episodes are˙      missing 625VT (U.K. broadcast standard) recordings but˙      exist in other (e.g. U.S.) formats.

The program was then put on an 18-month "break" by Michael Grade,
BBC1 controller.  Fear of the demise of the program brought in
large quantities of fan mail.  Grade then put the program "on
trial," so the plot followed suit, while returning to the
original 25-minute episode format.  A new companion was˙introduced without explaining what happened to Peri.

As of this writing the future of Dr. Who is in doubt since the˙BBC has not yet decided on whether or not it will be renewed. ˙There is talk that an independent production company˙(e.g. Hannah-Barbera, Disney, Fox, Terry Nation) might take it˙over.  It is also unclear whether McCoy or Aldred will be back. ˙Given that it is now April 1990 as of this writing, there will be˙no new stories filmed this calendar year.
