During their heyday (the 70s), Tull became one of the biggest concert draws, due to Anderson and the band's clownish stage antics and their amazingly complex interplay.,Their earlier albums, THIS WAS (#62), STAND UP (#20), and BENEFIT (#11), laid the groundwork for Tull's success, but it was 1971's AQUALUNG (#7) that put them over the top.,Not unlike many bands attempting to take rock to new levels through extended pieces, Tull released two back-to-back albums (THICK AS A BRICK, PASSION PLAY) containing one musical piece on each. Unlike many of those bands, both of these albums went to #1.,Jethro Tull also managed a couple of hits with "Living in the Past" (#11) and "Bungle in the Jungle" (#12). The band continues to release albums and tour. ~ Rick Clark ---------- Related Artists ----------- Anderson, Ian Gentle Giant Yes Focus ---------- Roots & Influences ---------- Beatles, The Moody Blues Fairport Convention British Folk music AMG Artist ID # : P000004610 Chronological Album List |Date| Label | Number |R S T|Rating --------------------------------+----+----------+--------+-----+------ Little Light Music, A |1992|Chrysalis |21954 | S T| OK This Is Not Love |1991|Audio Visu|6 | T| Catfish Rising |1991|Chrysalis |21863 |R | OK Rock Island |1989|Chrysalis |21708 |R S | Poor 20 Years of Jethro Tull |1989|Atlantic |50136 |R | Good Jethro Tull |1988|Chrysalis |1 | S | 20 Years of Jethro Tull - Highl|1988|Chrysalis |21655 |R | BestA 20 Years of Jethro Tull |1988|Chrysalis |21655 | S | Good Crest of a Knave |1987|Chrysalis |21590 | S | OK Original Masters |1985|Chrysalis |21515 | S | Classic Case, A |1985|RCA |7067 | | OK Under Wraps |1984|Chrysalis |21461 | S | Poor Lap of Luxury |1984|Chrysalis |1 | S | OK Broadsword & The Beast, The |1982|Chrysalis |21380 | S | Good A |1980|Chrysalis |21301 |R S | BestA Stormwatch |1979|Chrysalis |21238 | S | OK Heavy Horses |1978|Chrysalis |21175 | S | OK Bursting Out |1978|Chrysalis |21201 | S T| OK Songs from the Wood |1977|Chrysalis |21132 |R S | BestA Repeat: The Best of Jethro Tull|1977|Chrysalis |21135 | S | Good Too Old to Rock N' Roll, Too Yo|1976|Chrysalis |1111 | S | OK Ring out Solstice Bells |1976|Chrysalis |2 | S | M.U.: The Best of Jethro Tull |1976|Chrysalis |21078 |R S | Good Minstrel in the Gallery |1975|Chrysalis |21082 |R S | Good War Child |1974|Chrysalis |21067 | S | OK Passion Play, A |1973|Chrysalis |21040 | S | Poor Thick As a Brick |1972|Capitol |21003 | | Living in the Past |1972|Chrysalis |21035 |R S | BestA Life Is a Long Song |1971|Chrysalis |6106 | S | Aqualung |1971|Chrysalis |21044 |R S |+BestG Benefit |1970|Chrysalis |21043 |R S | Good Stand Up |1969|Chrysalis |21042 |R S | BestA This Was |1968|Chrysalis |21041 |R S | Good Thick As a Brick (24k U |Z |Mobile Fid|510 | | Thick As a Brick |Z |Mobile Fid|510 | | Stormwatch/Heavy Horses |Z |Pair |1018 | | OK Slipstream |Z |Pacific Ar|7467 | | Rocks on the Road |Z |Capitol |23818 | | Home |Z |Chrysalis |? | S | Best of Jethro Tull - the Anniv| | | | | 25th Anniversary |Z |Capitol |26004 |R | All-Music Guide Album Details (Alphabetical Order) ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : 20 Years of Jethro Tull Artist : Jethro Tull Rating : Good Genre : Rock Type : box Date : 1988 (release) AMG ID : R000010388 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD Chrysalis F2-21655 LP Capitol 21653 1988 CS Chrysalis F4-21655 ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Ian Anderson - fl/g/v ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : 20 Years of Jethro Tull Artist : Jethro Tull Rating : Good Genre : Rock Type : video Date : 1989 (release) AMG ID : R000086446 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- Atlantic 50136 ------- AMG Album Reviews ------- Fans of Tull should enjoy this collection that amply documents the band's entire career. But if you're still on these British rustics wavelength, you'll be pleasantly smitten with CATFISH RISING. Ian Anderson, their raffish leader and multi-instrumentalist, has written a varied batch of material here in a potpourri of styles, from sprightly acoustic jigs to lead weighted rock, all bearing his unmistakable stamp. It isn't Tull's most cohesive album, but because it's not tethered to concept, some people will actually find it easier to enjoy than the group's more pretentious masterworks. ~ Parke Puterbaugh, Stereo Review, December, 1991 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Classic Case, A Artist : Jethro Tull Rating : OK Genre : Rock Date : 1985 (release) AMG ID : R000010385 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- RCA XRL1-7067 ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Crest of a Knave Artist : Jethro Tull Rating : OK Charts : Billboard #032, entered Oct 10, 1987, on charts 028 weeks Genre : Rock Date : 1987 (release) AMG ID : R000010386 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD Chrysalis F2-21590 1987 LP Chrysalis 1590 CS Chrysalis F4-21590 ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Ian Anderson - fl/g/v ----------------------- All-Music Guide Album ------------------------ Album : Heavy Horses Artist : Jethro Tull Rating : OK Charts : Billboard #019, entered Apr 29, 1978, on charts 017 weeks Genre : Rock Date : 1978 (release) AMG ID : R000010380 (album inprint) --------- Album Releases --------- CD Chrysalis F2-21175 1978 LP Chrysalis 1175 CS Chrysalis F4-21175 ------- Album Personnel/Sidemen ------- Barriemore Barlow - Drums Martin Barre - Guitar John Evans - Keyboards John Glascock - Bass David. Ian Anderson, Tull's celebrated frontman, has honed his multiple abilities to a fine edge ... his flute playing is infectious, his vocals right on the money, and his production work is at its finest. Moreover, he's achieved more of a live sound than he has in the past ... he has also kept his music safely in vogue with the mainstream hard rock/heavy metal scene.
