All-Music Guide Biography
Inspired by Cream, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix, the Toronto,
Canada, power trio Rush formed in 1969, comprising guitarist Alex
Lifeson (b Aug 27, 1953), bassist Geddy Lee (b Jul 29, 1953), and
original drummer John Rutsey -- later replaced by Neil Peart (b Sep
12, 1952). Their first few albums were rather pedestrian hard rock,
but the addition of Peart in 1974 prodded the group into a more
complicated, heavy art-rock mode: King Crimson and Yes meet Led
Zeppelin.,"The Trees," metaphorically addressing the Quebec
secessionist movement (off of 1978's #47 HEMISPHERES) became a
controversial rock-radio hit. The 1980 album PERMANENT WAVES (#4),
containing two substantial AOR hits with "Freewill" and "Spirit of
the Radio" (#51), marked the beginning of a golden period for the
band, which peaked with the #3 followup MOVING PICTURES.,Rush briefly
flirted with a more synthesized sound, sublimating the band's natural
interplay. Fortunately, recent albums indicate Rush is back in top
form with PRESTO and ROLL THE BONES. ~ Rick Clark

Rush's first successful stab at a concept album. Like many of Rush's
albums during the 70s, this one deals with a futuristic scenario where
an individual triumphs over an impersonalized high-tech society. ~

In an attempt to retain its core adolescent audience, Rush revamps its
sound on COUNTERPARTS to fit into the scheme of the "alternative"
modern rock of the 90s. Naturally, it's only partially successful
since they can not abandon their trademark progressive rock. Where the
change-up is most noticeable is how the band's sound is more muscular
and powerful, recalling their earlier efforts. ~ All-Music Guide

PRESTO, Rush's 13th album of new studio material, and their first for
Atlantic, showed this Canadian trio coming out from under a succession
of bloodless-sounding techno-excursions (GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD
YOUR FIRE) and going for a much more open, accessible sound. From
beginning to end, the arrangements reflect more straightahead rock
playing than on any of their other albums. PRESTO contains some of
Neil Peart's best lyrics, and along with MOVING PICTURES, smartly
presents many of Rush's virtues in their best light. ~ Rick Clark

Rush's 13th album of new material shows this Canadian trio coming out
from a succession of bloodless-sounding techno-excursions ... and
going for a much more open, accessible sound. Overall, Rush lays down
more straight-ahead playing on [it], from beginning to end, than any
of their other albums. If you're looking for a good starting place to
sample this band's music, "Presto" smartly presents many of Rush's
virtues in their best light yet. ~ Rick Clark, Rock & Roll Disc.

ROLL THE BONES continues with the organic-sounding hard prog-rock
spirit of PRESTO, and it's equally fine. After many years of albums
and touring, it's obvious that Rush has maintained its edge as a
musical unit. The playing and material are primo throughout.
Highlights include "Neurotica," "Big Wheel," "Ghost of a Chance," and
the title cut. ~ Rick Clark

------- AMG Album Reviews -------
Eric Clapton's sublime bluesy score to RUSH is highlighted by two new
original songs including the moving tribute to his son, "Tears in
Heaven." ~ All-Music Guide

The third in a trio of great albums. "Digital Man" and "Analog Kid"
are powerful riff-rockers. "New World Man" was a #21 hit, and
"Subdivisions" was an FM rock favorite. The soundstage lacks some of
the ambience found on MOVING PICTURES, but the performances still pack
quite a punch. ~ Rick Clark
