The turbulent 60s, Froese's association with surrealist painter Salvador Dali, and the arrival of the Moog synthesizer were just a few of the forces that helped to fuel this German electronic group through a barrage of constant change in style and personnel. Core members over the years have included Froese and Chris Franke as well as Peter Baumann, who went on to start the Private Music label. Curiously enough, the band's most recent addition is Jerome Froese, Edgar's son, whose enigmatic photos as a baby can be found in the artwork to TD's early albums. Over the past 25 years or so, the TD sound has moved from the droning nightmares of ZEIT, to the mesmerizing sequencer-based masterpieces of RUBYCON and RICOCHET in the 70s, to the sparkling high-tech rock of the 80s. A cult phenomenon for decades, Tangerine Dream gained wider recognition when the group's highly evocative music attracted the interest of William Friedkin. This resulted in the score to the film SORCERER and the beginning of a large number of soundtracks. (TD's music for the Tom Cruise scorcher, RISKY BUSINESS, probably attracted the most attention.) It's a companion to the full-length video album which is titled THREE PHASE from Miramar. Needless to say, the audio portion stands very well on it's own for those who missed the tour or haven't seen the THREE PHASE video from the same tour. The tour guests joining Jerome and Edgar Froese for the tour did a superb job. Even though father and son both did some nice guitar work throughout, the real six string whiz on the tour was Zlatko Perica. The guitar leads really smoked. Linda Spa, playing sax and keyboards on the tour was the highlight of the album. She has a good sense of dynamics and intuitively knows just where to come in with those wailing sax solos. Together with Zlatko, they took the group to new musical heights. Since the release of ROCKOON the group has steadily fused more with rock and jazz influences. The result is a more fiery style of arranging and performing. A great example is the legendary Hendrix tune, "Purple Haze." It took some sizable guts to even contemplate covering this classic in a live situation. They pulled it off amazingly well. Throughout this piece, the Tangerine Dream signature sound was like a smooth undercurrent. The cosmic touch of Froese's music never disappears. Instead it contrasts very well against the more hot-blooded passages. The chord and lead playing both offer a much greater variety of sound. 220 VOLT LIVE is brilliant, technically dazzling but with a nice amount of classic spacemusic thrown in to quiet the pace every now and then. Over two decades have passed since Froese began this musical journey. It's refreshing to realize that he is still innovative and fresh after all this time. Not only is the CD a must for die-hard fans but the quality of the sound makes it worth acquiring by the novice listeners. The only problem is the price, about $85. Featured are seven unreleased tracks of film music, probably lifted from a video source like laserdisc. Most of the German "Tatort" TV series tracks released as vinyl singles are here, as well as the long sought "Ultima Thule" part 1. Some lesser known tracks by the band also make their CD debut: "Dolphin Smile" from the Relativity Records "Dolphin Dance" 12" single, and the three solo tracks from the 70-80 boxed LP retrospective - "Haunted Heights", "Chimes and Chains", and "Baryll Blue". The LP source material shows good stereo separation. The covers are laminated to matting board. The problem with the disc is that the material covers only the early years and the eighties material with nothing from the Virgin years. Jive in England released all this material at one point so they control the rights which, unfortunately, limits their choices. That point aside, I feel the selection is quite good and will give the listener good value for the buck. The vinyl and cassette versions have three tracks not on the CD. They were cut so the CD is only 71 minutes long. It took a long time, but seems worth the wait, as this is some of Tangerine Dream's most provocative music. Rather than hammering away and bending the electronics to fit the space given, there are subdued portions that attempt to convey the magic and mystery of the Grand Canyon, one of the true wonders of the world. Percussion and rhythmic elements add drama, synthesizers provide the storyline, and guitars the characters! ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats TD received its first Grammy nomination with this album. The music was originally composed for a scenic video on the Grand Canyon, released under the same title. The company's first release is music scored for the HBO Cable TV movie from 1989. More than likely it was scored by Froese and Haslinger only. This is the music as it was used in the movie and was transferred from the film optical masters requiring several people to work on the music to bring it up to listening quality. A lot of material is sequencered rhythms. Several tracks are variations of melodies so it does tend to get a little monotonous with the repetition. The music is a pleasure to hear. Without Silva Screen's efforts, more than likely this music would never have been released. It would have only been heard through your TV where it was buried in the soundtrack. This CD has 22 tracks and it's total running time is around 36 minutes. The film was specially made for a new theater in Berlin that shows a full 360 degree picture. Tangerine Dreams's score is in the same style as their last album LILY ON THE BEACH. There are a couple nice light-weight songs but the rest of the material is a little bland. There are no killer guitar tracks to grab your attention. The music, though, probably did what it was supposed to; fill the background. At times one wants to be inspired or really lifted by the music but overall that never occurs. This soundtrack was released in Germany. "Alexander Square" is the CD single from the soundtrack. The first track is an extended remix of the CD title and available on this single only. The CD also has the soundtrack versions of "Berlin Summer Nights" and "Alexander Square (LP Version)". The music is by the combo of Edgar Froese and Paul Haslinger (now departed). The music is similar in style to the recent Private Music releases. Good rhythmic structure combined with strong melodic composition shows this album to be one of the best albums by Tangerine Dream. Definitely one of their best soundtracks in a long time. The soundtrack, though, is a revelation on the music that was composed. Track five "Purposes Of Brevity" harkens to earlier TD days with its sequencer driven rhythm. Through the personnel changes over their 20+ year history of recordings, we are left with only founding member Edgar Froese and recent band-mate Paul Haslinger. LILY ON THE BEACH solidifies their place in contemporary music, finding a slight return to more non-synthesized sounds, such as drums and guitars. While occasionally resorting to a choppy or mechanical approach, most of the tracks are inventive and rhythmically compelling, offering a mixture of slower, melodic pieces with several downright rock-oriented ravers. This is the third Private Music release for this German group, and they now seem content and established as this premier label brings their sound fully into the 90s. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats The Dream lives on but the sound is a changin'. Ralph Wadephul, who lasted long enough for the '88 tour, is gone now too. A new tour is planned and supposedly a third member will be added for that - probably to turn on the computers. The new album sports fourteen shorter length tracks and several are quite good. The opening track "Too Hot for My Chinchilla" has smoker guitar by Edgar. The music has the style of "Optical Race" but the feel is much better. The electronic-spacemusic-rock-fusion pioneers are back, loud and clear, on their latest Private Music release MELROSE. Dancing between funk, fusion, jazz and spacemusic, Tangerine Dream weave a complex mixture of music that is both introspective and danceable. From the title cut with its wailing sax line to the upbeat and lively "The Art of Vision," from the dreaminess of "Three Bikes in the Sky" to the mystery of "Yucatan," Tangerine Dream demonstrate that they can still craft an album of beauty and power. Many of us first experienced (and fell in love with) spacemusic through exposure to Tangerine Dream in the mid-70s. MELROSE is a worthy successor to this illustrious musical heritage. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats Quite a contrast from LOGOS LIVE, this album is one of the better examples of the band's recent immersion in adult-alternative electronic pop. ~ Linda Kohanov Tangerine Dream has now completed twenty years of recorded music releases. MELROSE is the third studio release under the Private Music contract. The previous album had been a killer release with some hot guitar work so, with trepidation, I placed the new CD in my player wondering to what direction the band has moved it's music. The first playing was frankly disappointing. I set the album aside for two weeks and came back to it for a more thoughtful listening. After a few spins, I think it is one of their better releases, especially comapred to OPTICAL RACE. When TD signed to Private Music, they started a whole new sound. The sound is more urban but still in keeping with their progressive movement in music. The band has always tried to push the limits of their musical development and sound to be as contemporary as possible. In one critical area, I have felt that some of their percussion and drum sounds were too thin; bringing to mind those battery operated toy monkeys that beat at high speed on tiny drums. The sax on two tracks seem to be forced. MELROSE is laid-back shows the band building thoughtful and carefully constructed music. Jerome Froese, Edgar's son (The child that was pictured on the older album covers) makes his debut on this album. He and his father provide some really good guitar work that fuses well with the other sounds on their palette. The movie has a high degree of tension and the score by T.D. does just the trick. They use mostly hard driving sequencer rhythms to maintain the tension of the film. Listeners will find that this is nearly how all of the music is composed. There is very little melody within the structures of the music. But even with this lacking, the score is very well suited and very listenable. A couple of nonsequencer tracks are also on the album and break up the hard rhythms pieces. After more than two decades of success and 50 albums, including many soundtracks, Tangerine Dream pulls out all the stops on this latest foray into a decidedly rock-tinged groove. Their trademark sound is contained as well in several of the mid-tempo pieces which stretch out perfectly amidst the more energetic tunes. Founder Edgar Froese is joined on ROCKOON by his son Jerome who adds songwriting talents as well as his compelling guitar and keyboard textures. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats Though the music has its moments, TD's most recent album is listed mostly as a reference. ~ Linda Kohanov Hurrah! After a long string of painfully mediocre albums, TD signs with a new label, Miramar, and produces their best effort in years. With ROCKOON, TD rediscovers integrity, and also their roots in the process. Somewhere along the way, TD lost it's sense of direction and perspective. TD regained what they had lost, no doubt due to Jerome's fresh input/ideas complemented by Edgar's experience and expertise. Edgar and Jerome have made a bold and brash stance by making this album much more guitar/rock oriented -you have been warned! This will alienate and repulse many TD fans. Indeed, this record has not gained favorable press so far, despite being more adventurous, complex, and yes, exciting for a change. "Big City Dwarves", "Red Roadster', and "Rockoon" are the more high-powered offerings on the record that completely satisfy. "Touchwood", "Penguin Reference", and "Girls On Broadway" are the best slow-mid tempo pieces heard here. All are thoroughly engaging. Sure there are losers in here too: "Funky Atlanta" is not especially funky, nor interesting for that matter; "Spanish Love", while incorporating some interesting textures, is a rather superficial effort, and "Lifted Veil" is a complete washout - the token love song complete with sappy sax and piano strains. The best thing that can be said of TD is that they've never been afraid to travel off the beaten path, and in some cases, blaze trails where there was none.
