FLOWER OF THE DESERT
BALDWIN OF EREBOR
C DM F C
ONE COLD WINTER'S EVENING, I STOPPED AT AN INN
EM F
I MET A BOLD CAPTAIN, A LEADER OF MEN
A C EM F
HE ASKED ME TO JOIN HIM, FOR HE WAS ALONE
DM F C
AND AS WE SAT DRINKING, HE SPOKE OF HIS HOME
C EM F
CHORUS: OH FLOWER OF THE DESERT, FULL WELL MAY YOU BOAST
DM C
PROUD FATHER OF KINGDOMS, FROM MOUNTAIN TO COAST
EM F
THE LAND OF THE PHOENIX YOUR WORKS HAVE BEEN FELT
DM F C
OH FLOWER OF THE DESERT, ATENVELDT
WHEN I WAS A YOUNG MAN AND STILL IN MY PRIME
MY LIFE STRETCHED BEFORE ME, I'D PLENTY OF TIME
BUT NOW I'M AN OLD MAN, AND NUMBER MY DAYS
AND I THINK OF MY HOMELAND, THAT SEEMS SO FAR AWAY
CHORUS
I'VE FOLLOWED THE WARS NOW, FOR MANY A YEAR
ROLLED PLENTY OF WENCHES, DRUNK AN OCEAN OF BEER
LIVED MY LIFE TO THE FULLEST AS A SOLDIER MUST DO
BUT I'D TRADE IT ALL FREELY FOR THE ATENVELT BLUE
CHORUS
THE FIRE DIED TO EMBERS, HE DRANK STEADILY ON
WHEN I WOKE IN THE MORNING, THE CAPTAIN WAS GONE
BUT I THINK ON HIS STORY, WHEREVER I BIDE
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL KINGDOM, TO INSPIRE SUCH PRIDE
*
FOLLOW ME UP TO CARLOW
BRUTE MACAYER HOLD YOUR FACE,
BROODIN' OVER THE OLD DISGRACE
THAT BLACK FITZWILLIAM STORMED YOUR PLACE,
AND DROVE YOU TO THE FURDIN
GRAY SAID VICTORY WAS SURE,
SOON THE FIREBRAND HE'D SECURE
UNTIL HE MET AT GLEN MOOR,
FIACH McHUGH O'BYRNE
CHORUS: CURSE AND SWEAR LORD KILDARE,

SEE ALL THE CHILDREN OF THE GALES,
BENEATH O'BYRNE'S BANNERS
ROOSTER OF A FIGHTING STOCK,
WOULD YOU LET A SAXON COCK
CROW OUT UPON AN IRISH ROCK?
FLY UP AND TEACH HIM MANNERS!
CHORUS
FROM TOSAGART TO CLONMORE
THERE FLOWS A STREAM OF SAXON GORE
WELL GREAT IS RORY OG O'MORE
AT SENDIN' THE LOONS TO HADES
WHITE IS SICK, GRAY IS FLED,
NOW FOR BLACK FITZWILLIAM'S HEAD
WE'LL SEND IT OVER DRIPPIN' RED,
TO QUEEN LIZA AND HER LADIES

Frantic SCA
(Words by .. Lady Brynna of Aelfstanbury)
(Tune .. Harried Leisure Class)
We Hurry To All These Events
As If We're On A Quest
And We're So Busy Having Fun
That We've No Time To Rest
Oh, There's Swords To Swing And Bows To String
And New Garb To Display
There Are So Many Things To Do
When You're In The SCA
No Time Have We For Sitting Back
And Twiddling Our Toes
For There's A War To Fight Next Week
And We Just Have To Go
For All The Knights Will Be There
We Just Can't Stay Away
We Have Our Feudal Obligations
When We're In The SCA
We're Going To Have Our Own Event
In Just A Week Or Two
The Autocrat's A Nervous Wreck
And We Don't Know What To Do
We Toil All Night With Frantic Haste
And Sleep At Work The Next Day
For We All Do Our Part
When We're In The SCA
So Much There Is We Have To Do
There Is Simply Is No Way
Were So Tired From Rushing About
{Slowly Now} I'd Scarcely Call It Play
We'll Be Peers Before We're Thirty
If We Live To See That Day
{Faster} But It'll Be A Lot Of Fun
'Cause We're In The SCA

The Hero of Fallshire Fair
David of Bagula, Rodger of Golliard
Deep in a forest of green and mist
A Knight clad in armor and shield
His lance tilted high and his sword close by
Come forth to the tournament field
Come dance with me to the hill-country
To a place in the shade of the trees
I'll meet you there at the Fallshire Fair
Where time is whenever you please
The dancers were circling their hands were all joined
As the knight watched them gaily go round
One maiden fair was there who was passing fair
And she caused his heart to pound
Come dance with me in the hill-country
All under the flowering trees
Come dance with me there at the Fallshire Fair
Where time is whenever you please
He went to the maid when the dance had played
And he made her an offer so fine
Come you hand-in-hand to the merchant's stand
A scarf of fine silk shall be thine
Fine scarves to wear, for your lady fair!
You'll never find better than these
Fine scarves to wear at the Fallshire Fair
Where time is whenever you please
Then onto the tourneyfield strode this knight
And issued a challenge so bold
If any man 'round claims the victor's crown
Stand forth your claim to uphold
So sword met shield in the hill-country
All under the trembling trees
But none over there at the Fallshire Fair
Could bring this bold knight to his knees
Then unto his lady this knight did go
Bestow me your favor said he
I'll love no man only for fighting sir
But write me a song and I'll see
Come sing me a song of the hill-country
Of a place in the shade of the trees
And I'll join you there at the Fallshire Fair
Where time is whenever you please

The Highwayman
Alfred Noyes - Phil Ochs
Em G C
The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
Em G C D
The moon was a ghostly galleaon tossed upon cloudy seas
Em G Cd
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
Em G B7 Em
And the highwayman came riding, riding, riding-
C G C D
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn door.
Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn yard
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was
locked and barred;
He whistled a tune to the window and who should be waiting
there
But the landlord's black eyed daughter, Bess, the landlord's
daughter
Plating a red love-knot into her long black hair.
"One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize tonight,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning
light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight, watch for me by moonlight,
I will come to thee by moonlight, though Hell should bar the
way."
He did not come in the dawning; he did not come at noon;
And out of the tawny sunset, before the rise of the moon,
When the road was a gypsy's ribbon, looping the purple moor,
A red-coat troop came marching, marching, marching-
King George's men came marching, up to the old inn door.
They tied her up to attention, with many a sickening jest,
And they bound a musket beside her, with the barrel to her
breast.
"Now keep good watch!" and they kissed her. She heard the
dead man say,
"Look for me by moonlight, watch for me by moonlight,
I will come to thee by moonlight, though Hell should bar the
way."
"Look for me by moonlight." The hoof-beats ringing clear.
"Watch for me by moonlight." Were they deaf they did not
hear?
Her eyes grew wide for a moment; she drew one last deep
breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight, her musket shattered
the moonlight
Shattered her breast in the moonlight, and warned him - with
her death.
He turned, he spurred him westward; he did not know who stood
Bowed with her head o'er the musket, drenched with her own
red blood.
Not 'til the dawn he heard it; his face grew gray to hear
How Bess, the landlord's daughter, the landlord's black-eyed
daughter,
Had watched for her love by moonlight, and died in the
darkness there.
Back he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him, and his rapier
brandished high!
Blood red were his spurs in the golden noon, wine-red was his
velvet coat,
When they shot him down on the highway, with a bunch of lace
at his throat.
And still of a winter's night, they say, when the wind is in
the trees
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding, riding, riding-
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn door.

The King Is Dead
(Words .. Robert Grey)
(Tune .. Jimmey Cracked Corn)
The King Is Dead, This Much We Fear,
He's Layed Out On His Royal Bier,
He's Stretched Out Stiff As Any Board,
And We Can't Find The Royal Horde.
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
But He Hid His Treasure Away.
Orlando Storms And Stomps Around,
But Larrys Treasure Can't Be Found,
Micheala Who Is Ex-Princess,
Is Forced To Reign Quite Penniless.
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
But He Hid Her Treasure Away.
The Gold We'd Like To Have Around,
But Larry Also Hid The Crown,
And Everyone Cried Look At That
They've Crowned Orlando With A Hat
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
But He Hid Our Crown Away.
Orlando's Sure It Is No Joke,
To Reign When He Is Stone Cold Broke,
He Cannot Reign In Royal Fame,
Without A Penny To His Name.
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Orlando's Broke Today.
The Exchequer She Wasn't Lax,
She Had The King Declare A Tax,
They Sent The Knights Out To Collect,
And None Of Them Have Come Back Yet.
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
Laurence Is Dead And We Don't Care,
We'll Pay No Tax Today.

The Kings Lost Crown
(Words .. Lady Brynna of Aelfstanbury)
(Tune .. MacIntyre)
Some Friends And I At The War Last Year
Were Drinking Quite A Bit Of Ale
When Into The Tent A Squire Ran
His Face all Drawn And Pale
"What's Wrong" Says John "Was The War Called Off ?"
"Has The Pensic Inn Burned Down ?"
"Your Bleeding Inn Be Buggered" Says He
"The King Has Lost His Crown "
"What Ho " Says John "Here's A Bit Of Sport,
And I Don't Think You'll Mind
Let's Search The Camp If The Crown's Not There
Then Who Knows What We'll Find
So We All Took Off On Our Grand Old Hunt
To Find The King's Gold Crown
And We Took The Camp By The Ears That Night
And Turned It Upside Down
Well There We Were Clad In Fur
The Tuchux Could Not Spare
"More, More", The Ladies Cried
While They Stood Around All Bare
And That's Just Part Of The Loot We Got
The King Shouted "Where's My Crown "
That's The Only Thing We Couldn't Find
When The Camp Turned Upside Down
Well James Went Looking Thru The Horde's Big Camp
And Their Standard Took His Eye
When They Found It Gone, For The Very First Time
We Saw A Mongol Cry
For The Heck Of It We Searched The Inn
And Every Drink To The Dregs
But We Couldn't Find The Bloody Crown
Though We Emptied All The Kegs
Well, There Was John, Pink Gown On
And James In The Khan's Fur Hat
"Hold, Hold", The Marshals Cried
"You Can't Fight A War Like That"
Oh Who Gives A Damn, It's All A Game
The King Shouted "Where's My Crown "
That's The Only Thing We Couldn't Find
When The Camp Turned Upside Down
And Then There Came A Frightful Scream
Squire John Beat A Fast Retreat
He Came Running From The Ladies Shower
His Face Red Like A Beet
Well The Queens Got Miffed And Called The Knights
And They Chased Us Round And Round
We Were Having Quite A Merry Old Brawl
When The Crown Was Finally Found
Well There Was The Crown, Upside Down
Along With The King's Royal Breeks
"Oh No ", The King Exclaimed
"I Left Them Down By The Creek"
So We Fetched Them Back To Our Royal Liege
But Little Thanks We Got I Fear
"Ah Boys", He Said, As He Put Them On
"Do You Think You Could Find Some Beer ?"

Knights in White Satin
(Words by .. Robert Grey and the Shire)
(Tune .. Knights in White Satin)
Knights in White Satin, Riding Thru the Wood
All of Them Paladins, All Lawful Good
Each With a Holy Sword, And Magic Shield
With These to Fight With, Against Evil to Wield
Cause God Loves Them
Yes God Loves Them
Oh How God Loves Them
Gazing at Balrogs, And Demon Kind
Hacking and Slashing, Just to Unwind
Cleansing the City, Of It's Dark Foe
Then Into the Sunset, On a New Quest They Go
Say God Loves You
Our God Loves You
Our Gods Love You
Knights in White Satin, Drive Thru the Plains
Ignoring the Snowstorms, Scorning the Rain
Fighting for Justice, Fighting for Right
Fearing no Darkness, Serving the Light
God is With them
God is With them
Their God is With Them
A Knight in White Satin, Lies Dead on the Field
Broken His Blessed Sword, Shattered His Shield
Beside Him a Horrid Foe, A Foe of the Light
Slain at the Cost of, the Blood of One Knight
God Be With Him
God Be With Him
God Be With Him
And Them With Their God ... Oh .. Ah .. Amen

Text Of A Letter To Drachenwald
(Words by .. Lady Brynna of Aelfstanbury)
(Tune .. My Bonny Lies Over The Ocean)
My Lord We Have Great News To Tell You
Too Wonderful Simply To Write
While You've Been Away At The Crusades
Your Lady's Been Learning to Fight
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She's Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What A Surprise For Her Lord
It's True She's a Delicate Creature
A Vision Of Sweetness And Light
We Know That It's Hard To Believe, But
Your Lady's Been Learning To Fight
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She's Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What A Surprise For Her Lord
With A Sword Of Rattan Wrapped In Duct Tape
In Armor And Helmet So Bright
You'd Better Start Practicing Quickly
Your Lady Is Learning To Fight
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She's Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What A Surprise For Her Lord
So Polish Up Weapons And Armor
And Hone Up Your Skills To Their Height
And Say A Few Prayers While Your At It
Your Lady Has Learned How To Fight
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She's Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What A Surprise For Her Lord
So This Puts An End To Carousing
No More You'll Go Wenching All Night
We're Sorry For The Inconvienence
But We've Taught Your Lady To Fight
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She's Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What A Surprise For Her Lord
We Know That You May Not Believe It
She Once Was So Timid And Meek
But You'd Better Get Used To It Quickly
Cause She Won Crown Tourney Last Week
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She's Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What A Surprise For Her Lord
So We Thought We'd Send You A Letter
And Spare You A Terrible Scene
Of Returning At Last To Your Homeland
To Find Out That You Are The Queen
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, She's Learning to Handle a Sword, A Sword
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh What A Surprise For Her Lord

THE MAN WHO WOULDN'T DIE
SIR CIPRIANO DE ALVAREZ
I'VE ARMORED UP A THOUSAND TIMES FOR
COUNTRY AND FOR KING
AND MANY'S THE TALE THAT I COULD TELL
OR SONG THAT I COULD SING
I'VE FOUGHT IN BELTANE'S DRIVING RAIN
AND STRUGGLED FOR EACH BREATH
AT SALT WARS AND OLENO WHERE
WE DAMN NEAR FROZE TO DEATH
I'VE HAD MY SHARE OF BRUISES AND
I'VE WATCHED THE ARROWS FLY
BUT THE STRANGEST THING THAT I'VE EVER SEEN
WAS THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT DIE
HE STOOD A TOWERING SEVEN FEET
A GAINT AMONG MEN
HIS ARMOUR WAS OF TWELVE GUAGE STEEL
HIS HIDE IT WAS OF TEN
FROM A LAND MOST FAR AWAY HE CAME
THEIR CHAMPION AND KING
AND MANY CRAFTY WAYS HE HAD
TO MAKE YOUR HELMET RING
THE BATTLE LINES THEY SOON WERE JOINED
AND MUCH TO MY SURPRISE
I WAS LOCKED IN SINGLE COMBAT WITH
THE MAN WHO WOULDN'T DIE
WE CIRCLED ROUND A TIME OR TWO
THEN I OPENED UP THE SHOW
WITH AN UNDERHANDED WRIST SHOT WHICH
IS STILL MY FAVORITE BLOW
HE DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO BLOCK
JUST BROUGHT THAT GREATSWORD DOWN
AND SPLIT MY HELM COMPLETELY FROM
THE CHIN UP TO THE CROWN
AND THOUGH MY SWORD WAS STILL ENTRAPPED
IN THE DENT MADE IN HIS SIDE
"WHAT A MIGHTY KNIGHT" HIS PEOPLE CHEERED
"IS THE MAN WHO WOULDN'T DIE"
FULL FOUR AND TWENTY FIGHTERS FELL
BEFORE HIS AWESOME MIGHT
AND THOUGH MANY BLOWS DID LAND IT SEEMS
THAT EVERY ONE WAS LIGHT
THE BATTLE SOON WAS OVER AND
BY GOD'S OWN BLOOD HE WENT
OFF TO THE SIDES TO DOFF HIS GEAR
AND HAMMER OUT THE DENT'S
THE SECOND BATTLE SOON BEGAN
AND I TOOK ANOTHER TRY
BEARING A SWORD NAMED "RHINO'S BANE"
FOR THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT DIE
FOR "RHINO'S BANE" WAS A SPECIAL BLADE
IMMORTAL FOR THE OOW
AND IF HE HAD NOT FELT THOSE BLOWS
HE'D DAMN WELL FEEL ONE NOW!
THREE FEET OF RATTEN I CENTER DRILLED
THEN HOLLOWED OUT THE HEAD
AND FILLED THAT HOLE WITH SIX OR MAYBE
SEVEN POUNDS OF LEAD
A SINGLE SHOT WAS ALL I'D GET
I RAISED THAT SWORD ON HIGH
AND BURIED IT WITHIN THE HELM
OF THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT DIE
HE DIDN'T EVEN BAT AN EYE
JUST CALMLY STRUCK ME DOWN
AND THEN WENT ON TO CLEAR THE FIELD
OF SQUIRES, KNIGHTS, AND CROWN
I POUNDERED WHY THIS MAN WAS NOT
A'STRETCHED OUT ON THE DIRT
I GUESS A HEAD SHOT DOES NO GOOD
WITH NOTHING THERE TO HURT
THE THIRD ENGAGEMENT WAS DELAYED
TO GIVE THE CHIURGEON'S TIME
TO PRY THE SWORD FROM OUT THE HEAD
OF THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT DIE
A BATTLE DEEP WITHIN THE WOODS
WAS THE LAST FIGHT OF THE DAY
AND THE MEN REMAINING ON MY SIDE
WENT ON THEIR KNEES TO PRAY
"OH LORD IF YOU CARE FOR US
ALLOW YOUR MOON TO FALL
UPON THIS MAN FOR THAT WOULD BE
THE ONLY BLOW HE'D CALL"
BUT AS WE MARCHED ATOP A HILL
A PLAN OCCURRED WHICH I
THOUGHT MAYBE COULD LEAD TO THE DEATH
OF THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT DIE
UPON THE HILL THERE LAY A STONE
A FULL SIX FEET IN GIRTH
"OH GATHER ROUND MY FIGHTERS BOLD
WE'LL BRING THIS MAN TO EARTH!"
TEN STALWART LADS I NEED WITH ME TO
STRIKE THE FINIAL BLOW
WHILE THE REST SHALL KEEP BEHEMOTH HERE
OCCUPIED BELOW
AND WHEN HE TRIES TO FIGHT YOU
FROM UP ABOVE WILL FLY
THIS BOULDER FULL UPON THE FRAME
OF THE MAN WHO WOULD NOT DIE
IT HAPPENED JUST AS I FORSAW
FROM OUT THE WOODS HE RAN
AND STOPPED THERE RIGHT BELOW US AS
ACCORDING TO THE PLAN
THE MEN BELOW FOUGHT BRAVELY WHILE
THE MEN ABOVE DID STRAIN
TO SEND THAT BOULDER FROM THE HILL
ONTO HIS ALLEGED BRAIN
AT LAST THE STONE IT STIRRED TO LIFE
AND WITH A FINAL PRY
WE SENT THAT BOULDER ON IT'S WAY
TO THE MAN WHO WOULDN'T DIE
KNOCKING TREES TO LEFT AND RIGHT
THAT FEARSOME MISSLE SPED
AND WITH A FINAL BOUNCE IT CAME
TO REST UPON HIS HEAD
HIS ARMS AND LEGS WERE ALL THAT WE
COULD SEE BENEATH THE STONE
BUT WHEN WE CAME FROM ATOP THE HILL
WE HEARD OUR VICTIM GROAN
ASTOUNDED ROUND HIM 'BOUT WE STOOD
AS THE DAY BLED INTO NIGHT
AND HEARD HIM SAY ONE FINAL TIME
"MY LORDS THAT BLOW WAS LIGHT!"
