Freedom Writer - September 1995

San Diego, CA — The fifth national observance of See You At the Pole
is set for 7 a.m. on September 20, 1995. The Religious Right conceived
the event as a way to inject religion in the public schools at the
start of the school year. Promoters claim that last year more than
two million high school and college students met at their school's
flagpole to pray.
Although held on public school property, participants claim that the
event is student-initiated and student-led, therefore not violating
the constitutional requirement of separation between church and state.
School personnel participate at some schools, but supposedly do not
assist in organizing or executing the event.
Religious Right leaders claim that since the movement is student-led
and student-organized, no sponsoring organization exists. However,
in true evolutionary form, this year's theme has emerged as "Humble
Yourselves and Pray."
