<9305051231.AA08572@torsys04_7.Canada.lsil.com> Is it possible for games, such as XWing, to use their native General MIDI mode to communicate directly with the GUS? I.e. is their a Midi equivalent to SBOS which traps the Midi port transactions and dumps them to the GUS? It appears that this would be an ideal replacement for SBOS, since many games have MIDI support. Since most musical scores for games are probably developed in the MIDI world, and then translated (read "downgraded") to some Adlib/SB format, using a TSR that would allow support for GMIDI seems to be the ideal way to go until more game manufacturers start supporting the GUS' native mode. As GUS owners, we have a right to be helped with our problems and have our qustions answered, yes.. but let's at least be fair about it. Mr. Smith is most likely a busy man (I do REMEMBER him saying he was going to be unable to answer MAIL for awhile, CORRECT??) and he does have a job to do. Their job is not only to help the end-users but to also get support from software/hardware manufacturers. Your comment "The customer is always right" is true, to an EXTENT. Why not be patient? I understand that you have written over and over and not gotten a reply...but they have other things to do, too. Not say the customers aren't important, but keeping their company alive is another responsibility. We are not the only ones who make it possible for Gravis employees to have a job -- it is other companies (i.e. Forte) who have helped in making the software.. imagine no Forte.. THEN where would our upgrades be? Don't forget we are not the only power.. I, for one, have had few problems with SBOS, and I have never called for technical help -- I figured it out, and it didn't take me 32.5 hours. I have not had the problems you've had, and I see that you're tired of them. I ask owners to try to be more patient -- better to have quality than quantity of revisions. We are busy, Gravis is busy, Forte is busy... in time, I think we'll see what we want to see. I hope by writing this I haven't started a major crisis. :') *Phil pjohnso2@ub.d.umn.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 May 93 21:33:09 From: john.smith@gravis.com Subject: JOHN.SMITH@GRAVIS.COM Message-ID: <9305052133.A5830wk@gravis.com> >Date: Tue, 04 May 93 10:38:53 -0400 >From: "It's your hand, Buckaroo" >Subject: Re: John.Smith@gravis.com >Message-ID: <9305041438.AA21595@magick.tay2.dec.com> > Does any body get a responce from John Smith when you send mail asking > about the GUS? And I'm not just saying that. You can email me at sysop@gravis.com, postmaster@gravis.com, tech@gravis.com, or even john.smith@gravis.com. All mail goes directly to me. I usually respond to mail every morning between 8-11am. The only people I am having problems receiving mail from is BNR.COM. I have been getting mail from people at DEC, HP, IBM, CRS and everyone else under the sun. Even got a bunch of mail from some happy GUS owners in what use to be Russia. Hmm..... I wonder if it could be a routing problem with long addresses? TBBS (our BBS software) can only handle up to 60 characters I think. Anyone out there with a REAL long address I could try this out with? If so, EMAIL me at john.smith@gravis.com so we can check it out. PS: The BBS is now back online. We now have 4 modems on 604-431-5927 and 2 more on a mail ONLY server. Our percent busy has dropped from 85% on our old 2 line BBS to 23% on the new system. Wew.. now maybe more of you guys can get on on the first attempt C'ya all in the bit stream. Message-ID: <3512*twong@civil.ubc.ca> I'm not sure why others are having so much problem emailing him. Perhaps your email bounced and never reached him. Being the guy who looks after our ftp site, I email John every once in awhile with questions. Mind you, it normally takes a couple of weeks for him to answer cause I imagine he'd be swamped with a world of questions (literally ;) ), but anywhere from a week to 3 weeks, I'd get an answer. At the beginning, I was using the Compuserve accounts for Alan, tech guy, and he took longer and longer to answer as more and more people asked him questions. But John has answered all my questions, from question on files he has on the Gravis BBS, to who I should ask to look into my Ultra Chuck Yeager order (which I did get a long time ago). And yes, I have been using john.smith@gravis.com. Now mind you, I'm not sure if he does get the mailing list, but I know he reads comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard cause he replies to questions there if you read it. They have just moved to a new building so I don't think he will be able to get things going again (set things up) for another week or so. And this new site will provide more phone lines into Gravis BBS. Anyways, here are the email addresses I have.... for Alan, the tech guy, 71333.350@compuserve.com. OR for Chris, the salesguy, yuzik@sfu.ca. OR for John, the Gravis BBS sysop, john.smith@gravis.com Thomas. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 May 93 12:01:30 CDT From: eason@ncrnd3.StPaul.NCR.COM (Dale Eason) Subject: New Version of gusorgan Message-ID: <9305061701.AA18595@ncrnd3.StPaul.NCR.COM> I have uploaded to epas submit directory a new version of gusorgan. Chill. Gravis has been moving this past week. Have you ever moved? Just getting the new phone line hooked up and the water, gas, and electricity turned on for a single apartment can be a bureaucratic nightmare for a good deal of time. Now think about moving an entire company. All the phone lines. All the computers. All the networking stuff. All the miscellaneous physical office equipment. All the people. Scary thought, eh? I have not been as lucky as yourself if you have a secret (photos of him with another woman that sort of thing) that gets such a good response rate great tell us. I have a response rate of 3 for 7 if it is that good. I do know that Gravis and Co. have moved but mine and I believe others problems started long before that. I am still waiting for a response on two letters (real ones with an envelope and a stamp) that I sent back in December. I beleive this is a long term customer service failing at Gravis Co. and they need to hear our feedback to improve. I mean really my office deals with the public and we recently moved and were still able to get our customers served and half of our building is STILL (note of bitterness :)) not finished. At my office we remember which side our bread is buttered on. If we forgot we'd all be on the street the next day. As for luck on CompuServe I think that it is great (truly) that you have access and can get through to John Smith. However, most of us who use the Internet do so because we lack the means to use such a service. I would love to have an account with CompuServe but I simply cannot afford it. Well enough of my ranting for one day I'll stop boring you. Serious comments and discussions welcome. Flames, keep'em in the high school locker room.
