TIME magazine this week covered briefly the announcement that
Senator Claiborne Pell, D, Rhode Island would not run for
re-election in 1996. They called him "the Hill's leading fan
of the paranormal," and went on to say, "in 1987, fearing an
ESP gap with the Soviets, he invited carnival-level spoon
bender Uri Geller to Washington to demonstrate his skills;
that same year Pell attended a symposium on UFO abductions.
For years he had an assistant on his staff responsible for
investigations into the paranormal -- at a reported $50,000 a
year."

I guess we have made some progress -- Uri Geller is finally
described as he should be; on the other hand, maybe someone
could tell me if TIME disparaged such 'oddball' types of
beliefs when an astrologer helped plan the President's
calendar... Or if they are saving it for those they want to
dump on politically...
