쿞CIENTIST SAYS DINOSAUR FLATULENCE MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO
쿒LOBAL WARMING

쿞AN DIEGO (OCT. 23) UPI - Dinosaur flatulence may have
쿬ontributed to global warming millions of years ago, an
쿔ndiana University scientist says.

쿞imon Brassell, a geochemist who has studied fossilized
쿭inosaur droppings, presented a paper at the annual meeting
쿽f the Geological Society of America advancing his theory.

쿓e said the fossilized dung included evidence of prehistoric
쿫acteria that could have resulted from the fermentation of
쿾lant stems and leaves. Such fermentation produces methane
쿲as, one of the ''greenhouse gases'' that trap heat in the
쿐arth's atmosphere.

쿓e said scientists have disputed for years the nature of
쿭inosaur digestion, many speculating that fermentation was
쿶nvolved - as it is in the digestive systems of elephants
쿪nd other large mammals - but had been unable to prove it.

쿍rassell and his associates found that proof, he said.
