Washington Mindfulness Community (WMC) Newsletter

The WMC was formed in 1989 by women and men inspired by the teachings
of Thich Nhat Hanh, a contemporary Vietnamese Zen Master, author and
peace activist. The WMC meets every Sunday evening from 7-9:15 for
meditation and discussion at the Washington Buddhist Vihara at 5017
16th St. NW DC. There is no charge and beginning meditators are
welcome. Meditation instruction and meditation cushions are available.

WMC CALENDAR AND EVENTS
>> Each Wednesday Morning at 6:30 am: Mindfulness meditation at

>> Last Sunday Each Month (29 OCT, 26 NOV, 28 JAN). WMC NEW MEMBER
ORIENTATION. A time to ask questions about sitting and walking
meditation, bells, gathas and other aspects of Mindfulness practice.
Open to all, but especially for new comers. We will meet from 6 to

>> Every Tuesday Evening beginning at 7:30 pm, Mindfulness Meditation
at the Unity Church in Oakton, VA. Call Bill Menza at 703-356-4912.
>> 1st Saturday Most Months (7 OCT, 4 NOV, 5 JAN). MINDFULNESS DAYS at
the Buddhist Congregational Church of America at 5401 16th St NW DC
with the Vietnamese Zen Group of Washington. Meditation from 10
until noon with vegetarian lunch afterwards. Call 703-938-9606 to
confirm.
>> 3-5 NOV 95. The next WMC "FAMILY WEEKEND GET-AWAY" retreat will
take place from Friday till Sunday at the Charter Hall Retreat
Center on the Susquehanna River. All WMC regulars, friends and
family are invited for a weekend of meditation, canoes, rowboats,
walks, children's activities, discussion groups, vegetarian food and
more ($40/adult). For more information please call Michael Lichten

>> 24 and 31 DEC 95. It is not yet clear if the WMC will be meeting

>> 1-3 DEC 95. Mindfulness Retreat with Anh Huong and Thu Nguyen
entitled "Taking Care of Body, Taking Care of Mind" at Claymont
Court in Charlestown, WV. For details, please call Diane Minor at
202-234-6065. Anh Huong and Thu Nguyen are Dharma Teachers ordained
by Thich Nhat Hanh.
>> Mitchell Ratner will be teaching an introduction to mindfulness
meditation class, entitled Smiling Like a Buddha, beginning in late
October. Course participants will learn and practice formal sitting
and walking meditation as well as techniques to develop mindfulness
in everyday life. The six-week class will be offered at two separate
locations, on Wednesday evenings (7:30 - 9:30), beginning October
25, at the Washington Ethical Society in Washington, DC, and on
Thursday evenings (7:30-9:30), beginning October 26, at Crossings:
A Center for the Healing Arts, in Takoma Park, Maryland. Classes
will not meet Thanksgiving week and will end the week of December 4.
