³GEOLOGISTS DEBATE VOLCANIC HISTORY OF NEVADA NUCLEAR WASTE ³

³WASHINGTON (AUG. 8) UPI - Geologists disputed estimates ³
³Thursday that the last volcanic activity at a proposed ³
³nuclear waste dump in Nevada occurred 20,000 years ago, ³
³saying they think it dates back some 140,000 years. ³
³ ³
³Researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, ³
³Calif., said their analysis of magnetic fields and the decay³
³of radioactive elements indicate two closely timed volcanic ³
³eruptions occurred near the Yucca Mountain, Nevada, site ³
³about 140,000 years ago. ³
³ ³
³That scenario contrasts sharply with work by Steve Wells of ³
³the University of California-Riverside, whose research based³
³on the structure and spacing of soil and rocks found ³
³evidence of five distinct volcanic eruptions running from ³
³about 100,000 years ago to about 20,000 years ago. ³
³ ³
³The Energy Department chose Yucca Mountain as a potential ³
³repository for high-level radioactive waste like fuel rods ³
³from nuclear power plants because it was thought to be a ³
³geologically stable area where buried waste could remain ³
³undisturbed for centuries. ³
³ ³
³Under federal mandate, such radioactive wastes must be ³
³isolated for 10,000 years. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission³
³would have the final say on whether it is safe to use Yucca ³
³Mountain as a dump site. ³
³ ³
³In their study published in the journal Science, Brent ³
³Turrin and his colleagues from the geological survey said ³
³they think Wells's age estimate of volcanic activity is ³
³''miscalibrated.'' ³
³ ³
³However, Wells countered that there are ''inherent ³
³problems'' in Turrin's dating approach and he sees nothing ³
³in the latest study to make him change his mind about his ³
³original estimate. ³
³ ³
³Bruce Crowe, the Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist in³
³charge of volcanism studies for the Yucca Mountain site, ³
³said he is ''trying to stay open minded and look at all ³
³possible alternatives'' for the volcanic history of the ³
³site. ³
³ ³
³In any case, the age of the latest volcanic eruption may ³
³mean little when it comes to the safety of the site for ³
³disposing of high-level nuclear wastes. ³
³ ³
³Some models suggest the younger the volcanic activity is, ³
³the greater the risk of an eruption damaging the site, while³
³other models suggest more recent eruptions may point to a ³
³longer resting spell before volcanic activity starts up ³
³again. ³

³In planning for a dump site, Crowe said he would prefer to ³
³err on the side of caution. ''The error we don't want to ³
³make is assume that it's volcanic activity is old when it's ³
³really young. There's nothing wrong with assuming it's young³
³when it's really old,'' he said. ³

³Crowe added that the potassium-argon radioactive dating ³
³method used by Turrin's team has limitations and the margin ³
³of error is not well known for the age of rocks they are ³
³dating. ³
