CAN National Conference - 1995

   1995 CAN Conference in New York

   The New York / New Jersey chapter of the Cult Awareness Network is the
host affiliate for the 1995 CAN National Conference. The conference is set
for November 3, 4 and 5 in White Plains, New York. The theme is "Cults:
Degrees of Danger." 

   Within the last 12 months the topic of cults has increasingly caught
the public's attention. In late 1994 at least 55 people involved with the
Order of the Solar Temple in Canada and Europe died. Since March of this
year the Aum Supreme Truth has made international headlines for the acts
of terrorism and violence which authorities now believe the group planned
and carried out.  Japanese police believe Aum was responsible for subway
gas attacks which could have killed thousands of people. The group is
known to have followers in the United States and Russia as well. In July
the U.S. House of Representatives held hearings on the Waco tragedy in
which an estimated 85 Branch Davidians who were followers of David Koresh
died in the fire that burned their headquarters to the ground following a
51-day siege by government authorities. 

   This year's conference speakers will explore the phenomenon of cults in
society and the types of harm they can cause. The conference will open
with keynote speakers Floyd Cochran and psychiatrist Louis J. West. 
Cochran was a spokesman, recruiter and strategist for the White Aryan
Nations. Dr. West is an internationally recognized expert on terrorism and
human rights.  On November 4 psychologists Margaret Singer and Paul Martin
will discuss influence techniques in society and their potential for harm.
Additionally on November 4, Daniel L. Leipold of Hagenbaugh & Murphey will
speak on the legal issues involving Scientology and the Internet. 
Well-known author Peter McWilliams is also a featured speaker. 
McWilliams' newest book, "Life 102: what to Do When Your Guru Sues You,"
is now available. 

   A number of workshops will cover topics of interest to both those
directly affected by cults and those who have concerns about the dangers
cults pose to society at large.  Workshop topics will include increasing
public awareness of the cult problem, legal issues posed by cults (such as
freedom of speech issues on the Internet and issues concerning crime and
violence,) new research concerning the cult issues, special problems faced
by children in cults, and family issues raised by cults. There will be
special workshops of interest to former members offered as part of CAN's
program by FOCUS, its network for former members. Spiritual concerns and
post- cult recovery issues will be covered.
