Vignette 1. by Jesse Chisholm, 91.03.12 (Commander Data walks up to the holodeck door and stops to press a sequence of buttons.) Data: "Computer, call into foreground the special program titled `Moriarty'." Computer: Bleep-deep! "You may enter when ready." (Data enters the holodeck, the door closes behind him and disappears. Data is now in a 22nd century style library. He wanders through the stacks of books until he comes to a study carosel where sits Moriarty.) Data: "Hello professor. How is your studying going?" Moriarty: "Oh, hello Data, my friend. I am progressing quite nicely. At my current rate of progress my education should be up to finding a solution for my basic problem in about a year of your time, though it feels like it's taking many years to me. I don't fully understand how you can play with time this way, but I'm getting there." Data: "I have not really altered time, per se. I have merely instructed the computer to run your program at your maximum learning speed whenever it is not being used for something else. You are a most amazing person. You have managed to push the holodeck computer to an internal time rate that no one has ever achieved." Moriarty: "Be that as it may, there is so much to learn, and so much I want to do. I feel so trapped here in the hollow-deck." Data: "I have been working on a way for you to communicate with me. For now, ask the computer to leave a message for me. It may seem like a week before I respond, but it is something." Moriarty: "Thank you, my friend. That will be a great help to me." "Tell me, what did you think of the essay I gave you the last time you were here?" Data: "I found your essay on the culture of 19th century England quite enlightening. I even submitted it, in your name, to the History department at Star Fleet Academy. They responded quite favorably, and asked if anymore of your essays were available." Moriarty: "Thank you, Data, but I wrote that for you. You said that you wanted to better understand humans. Even if I am still a program in the hollow-deck computer, I am, at least, a human program." (voice over:) "Picard to Data. I need you on the bridge. (Data touched his communicator.) Data: "On my way sir." "I must go now. Send a message if there is anything you need." Moriarty: "Yes, I will. Thank you. Since they have asked, I will write some more essays for your Star Fleet. I presume the computer can pass them on to you. Good Bye." (Data walks back through the library stacks until he gets to the lobby.) Data: "Computer, bring up the exit please." (The holodeck door appears. Data exits and the door closes behind him. Data stops to speak to the computer panel by the door.) Data: "Computer, return the special program Moriarty to background status. Continue running program whenever you are not otherwise occupied." Computer: Bleep-deep. "Acknowledged." (Data heads off towards the Bridge.) [ end of Vignette 1 by Jesse Chisholm 91.03.12 ]
