The Decline and Fall of the ROMULAN EMPIRE EPISODE 1: ANTAGONIZE (Scene: Aboard the NCC-1701A, Captain James T. Kirk commanding.) Kirk: Captain's Log, Stardate 8369.5. The Enterprise is performing a routine patrol of the perimeters of the Romulan Neutral Zone. We have received reports from Starfleet Intelligence that the Romulan Empire is planning an act of war against the Federation. This patrol is merely a preventive measure, to check for any...anomalies, or more substantial evidence we can provide the Federation Security Council. Sulu: Captain, there's a proximity alert off the Starboard bow. Uhura: Captain, we're getting a distress signal... Kirk: Put it on audio. Distress Signal: (with intermittent static) Enterprise, this is the Kobayashi Maru. We have struck a gravitic mine and have lost all power... Kirk: Cancel. Spock? Spock: Obviously, sir, someone who knows of the Kobayashi Maru test. Probably someone who has gone through Federation command training. Kirk: Someone? But who? Any sensor readings, Spock? Spock: None at this time, Captain. The object which triggered our proximity sensors is out of full sensor range and traveling at sub-light speeds. Kirk: Well, then, let's go to it. Uhura, can you get a fix on the transmission? Uhura: I did, sir, but the transmission ended suddenly after you told me to cancel the audio. Kirk: Where was the transmission coming from? Uhura: Well, sir, before it was cut off, the transmission was coming from inside the neutral zone. Kirk: This is too damned weird. Uhura, patch me in to Starbase 8. AL THE DETECTIVE *) The Decline and Fall of the ROMULAN EMPIRE EPISODE 2: DYNASTY AND EMPIRE! "...There were, of course, some factions pressured into leaving against their will, and they made their belated displeasure known in the counsels of ch'Rihan and ch'Havran much later, to the intense annoyance of the majority of the Rihannsu. Several of these 'for- gotten' factions are the reason that there sometimes seem to be num- erous different versions of the 'Romulan Empire,' all espousing dif- ferent aims and behaving in different ways..." -from Diane Duane and Peter Norwood, _The_Romulan_Way_ --------------------------- Kirk was confused, puzzled, and it showed. I thought it irregular that a captain of his honor and prestige would outwardly show such consternation in front of his crew, but everyone else was just as puzzled as he over this problem. Basically, the _Enterprise_ slept on it as they awaited Starfleet's orders. At about this time, S'tor was probably preparing to move on to the second stage of the Plan. S'tor's ship, the _Viell_ch'Havran_ (translated to Federation Standard as the _Glory_of_Remus_), was the gem of the Rihannsu fleet, and so was S'tor. For him, and it, to be sent on such a hazardous mission showed the desperation of the Planners. Yet the necessity, the urgency, was there, and no one could deny it. The pieces of the Plan started falling into place since the abduction of the Vulcan hermit Samek, a non-Kolinahri psionics master. After Samek learned of the Plan and approved of it, he trained a few Rihannha in his version of the mentalic arts. Once vestigial in the Rihannsu, now psionics became a new and vital part of the Plan, beginning in the H'lliefe "Dynasty" period of Rihannsu history. I was one of the last to go through full training before Samek's death by natural causes. The mind meld, limited telepathy, the nerve pinch, all were at my disposal so I could execute my own little part of the Plan. Yet my part was far from "little," because I had been sent to the Starfleet Academy to undergo and complete Officer Training, and gain a post on a strategically important Federation starship. It was by pure luck I became an ensign on the most important starship in the fleet. Of course, Starfleet had no way of knowing who I was. For all intents and purposes, I was a Vulcan, one of only two aboard the starship _Enterprise_. END EPISODE TWO (Next: More of Them, From Somewhere Else!) (* From the Computer of Alexander C. "(The word for the United Federation of Planets) translates most correctly as 'Them, from There' (as opposed to 'Us, from Here'). The Klingons, once encountered, were promptly named...'More of Them, from Somewhere Else..." -from Diane Duane and Peter Norwood, _The_Romulan_Way_ (NCC-1701A _Enterprise_, Bridge) Kirk: Uhura, have you been able to contact Starbase 8 yet? Uhura: Negative, Captain, something -- or someone -- seems to be jamming our signal. Kirk: Keep trying, Uhura. Uhura: (sighs) Aye, sir. I'll keep trying. Kirk: (to Spock, Scott) To the briefing room, gentlemen. (To Uhura) Uhura, tell Doctor McCoy to meet us in Briefing Room Two. Uhura: Aye, sir. (Briefing Room Two) Kirk: What is it that's out there? Could the Romulans be planning an attack? Spock: Unknown, Captain. With the subspace interference we are unable to access Starfleet Intelligence files. Scott: I say we investigate, Captain. For all we know, there could be a real ship in danger there. Kirk: But we'd be violating the Treaty! McCoy: Jim, if they're out there, we've got to help them! Kirk: I know, Bones, but somehow it all smells like a trap. The Klingons definitely presented a problem to S'tor and his ship, but to Kirk and crew it was the same problem as before. If only there were some way for S'tor to let Kirk know that their problems were the same... Of course, I had a different problem. How was I going to send my latest and probably most important intelligence report back to ch'Rihan? Normally I would send it off as a log buoy; log buoys are not a part of a Green Level Security check. But now this ship was on Yellow Alert, and everything would be subject to check. The report was important because I hadn't been able to send one for the last week or so, and any information on the _Enterprise's_ mission would definitely be vital. Curse the humans for their efficiency! I had sent off a buoy during Yellow Alert only once before, and I almost got caught. This time, not only was it too risky to send my report, the report was needed more than ever. I had to get it to the _Viell_ch'Havran_ before the _Enterprise_ took another action. I slumped in my chair. I was off duty for the moment, but I knew I could be called to duty at any moment. If anyone saw me in such a fit of despair, my cover may have been in jeopardy. Vulcans do not even slump. I straightened out and sat on my bed, assuming the meditating position that Vulcans love so much. It was then that the idea came to me. Since my next duty was scheduled to be transporter duty, I would transport the log buoy outside the ship, with a timer mechanism to set off the propulsion unit. It would just be a few minutes of work, no problem. I smiled, but squelched it. I was beginning to think like a Vulcan. I finished just before my call to duty came. I even arrived at my post two minutes early, carrying my little burden along with me. My plan worked perfectly, as I had hoped; if only they did not notice the energy drain of the transporter activation. Of course they noticed, and I was bound to be caught, but they had no way of knowing what it was I had transported. I offered no excuse, and I was severely reprimanded for "unauthorized use of equipment" and docked three day's pay. "No skin off my nose," as the humans would say. I would be greatly rewarded for my ingenuity when I got back to ch'Rihan. *If* I got back to ch'Rihan. My cover as the _Enterprise's_ "other" Vulcan was still intact. In fact, I was looking forward to one day actually meeting the most famous Vulcan ever to serve in Starfleet. My wish was never granted, though, and it's probably a good thing. Mr. Spock was probably the only one on the _Enterprise_ that could expose me for what I really was: a Romulan spy disguised as a Vulcan ensign. END EPISODE FOUR (Next: Conflict of Allies?) (_Viell_ch'Havran_ {_Glory_of_Remus_}, Bridge) S'Tor: t'Chai: Korge: What is the meaning of this? Why have you blocked our passage (audio) to attack the Earth ship? S'Tor: We are on a High Senatorial Intelligence Mission, and the completion of our mission requires that the Earth ship remains intact. Korge: It appears that our missions conflict, Commander _Viell_. Of course, our alliance agreement states... S'Tor: Damn the alliance agreement! If you and your ship do not desist, we will be forced to disable you. Korge: Ha! Don't make me laugh. You even *consider* using our own technology against us? S'Tor: The _Viell_ is more than she seems. Now will you desist, or will the conflict of allies begin? Korge: You *are* serious, aren't you? No, there will be no bloodletting today. We will desist, but know that my superiors will hear of your presumptuousness. S'Tor: And my superiors will hear of your graciousness. _Viell_ out.
