source list).  I do not include other ships listed in Star Trek novels, comic
books or third party publications, because I do not consider them to be official
sources.

Before I continue with the list, I would like to say a few things...

First off, there is a lot of conflicting information which is given in all of
the sources which I wad access to (see sources list).  I *always* used the
information which was presented in the Star Trek episode when a conflict arose.

Specifically:

The technical manual has many errors in it.  It is a truly remarkable book, but
It is not totally accurate. For instance, it does not list the U.S.S. Defiant as
a Contitution class ship even though it is seen in the episode "The Tholian
Web".  However, the Technical Manual lists the U.S.S. Valiant as being lost in
Tholian territory.  Obviously, there was a mistake.  Although two seperate
Valiant starships existed, neither of them were Constitution class Starships.
The time factor is the key.  The Constitution Class ships are only 40 years old
by the time of ST:tos.  And the two Valiant ships are far too old to be of this
class (50 and 200 years old).

(Heres how to figure it out)
In "The Counter-Clock Incident", Robert April (The first Commander of the
Enterprise) is approaching his 75th birthday, along with mandatory retirement.
He mentions that the Enterprise was the second Constitution class starship to be
constructed (after the Constitution) and that at the time he was 36 years old.
By simple math, it is clear that the Enterprise is approximately 39 years old,
and that the Constitution class starships have been around for no longer than 40
years.

Also, in the technical manual, it lists the Farragut as being destroyed.  By
viewing the episode "Obsession" it becomes clear that there is NO reason to
believe that this is the case.  The ship was attacked by the "vampire" Space
Cloud, and half of the crew WAS killed, but the cloud only killed the people, it
didn't damage the ship.  So while the mission was a complete failure, half of
the crew did survive (including Kirk) and return to Starfleet.

Also, this stuff about "Constellation-Class Heavy Cruiser" seems to be totally
based upon a typo in BJO Trimble's "Star Trek Compendium.  The error was then
propagated by author Vonda McIntyre.  Vonda says that she called the Enterprise
a Constellation class starship because BJO did, and whatever BJO said MUST be
true.  Well, the answer to this is yes and no.  On page 156 of the Compendium,
BJO says that the Enterprise is a Constellation class ship, however on page 231
she says it is a CONSTITUTION Class ship.  Well, something is amiss.  A while
ago Chris Wayne pointed out that in the script for "Space Seed", the Enterprise
is listed as a Constitution Class ship.  Therefore, I'm sure that if you were to
ask BJO, she would say that the Enterprise was a Constitution class starship.

Also, in the Compendium, BJO lists the registry number of the U.S.S. Republic as
NCC-1373.  This is also an error, in the episode "Court Martial" it is clearly
stated that it is NCC-1371.

In the episode "Omega Glory" The Starship U.S.S. Exeter was contaminated by a
deadly disease and the crew was killed.  I would assume that the ship was
eventually de-contaminated and re-used.  The ship was not destroyed.

Finnally, I would just like to acknowledge Eric Hendrickson, who posted an
earlier list of Starships with references. I really am glad that people like him
post these kind of things on the net.  I think that the technical trivia makes
the most interesting reading for the dihard Star Trek fan.

When I saw his posting, I was interested.  Yet, I knew that I could post a more
comprehensive list.  So I did.  Any responce or correction is eagerly envited.
