In the war torn corners of space known as the neutral zone, battle has already begun. As the Federation and the Klingons jockey for political position, field commanders fight to stay alive. With an ongoing shortage of dilithium and Federation/Klingon relations on a war footing there is a growing unrest among starfleet field commanders underfire in the field. James T. Kirk has become a liability. Captain Nielson: [Garbled and static filled] Captain Nielson here. [Clearer] We are functional enough not to need YOUR escort Enterprise, Sorenson OUT. [captain motions to the officer to cut off communications by drawing an imaginary slash across his throat] Orrington: Bad. We've lost 6 starships and 19 ore carriers. The outer stations are calling for the head of James Kirk As the galaxy stands on the brink of a war that could obliterate billions, An advanced research team has made a discovery that could eternally change the balance of power. Novak: I say we keep this secret, we don't even know what we're dealing with here. Jennings: {With Hostility} We were sent out here by Starfleet as a survey team. I don't think any of us have to be reminded of what's going on out there. Novak: Starfleet politics are not our concern, we are a mining research station not the Starfleet General Security Council. Xu: Computer On Audio, full screening Taylor: That sounds like a biologic. Orrington: Theres only one way to know for sure, We'll have to go down there. An Allianced is formed in the heat of political battle; Figure: Our ranks are larger than you know. Figure: Then we have a deal Mr. Ambassador, [Pan angle spins to a starfleet insignia above the computer. as we are over the shoulder of the figure locking head on at the monitor] Have your forces stand ready. Voice Over: To the End of these attacks. ---- And Now Part II of The Neutral Zone Figure: And the End of James -- T. -- Kirk. He presses a button on the comm system sounding the familiar intership whistle. As the screen blinks to the Starfleet Logo. Communications Voice Over: Narrott Here Sir, Captain Captian: Get me Captain Halverton Nielson code 47-- Captain's eyes only. On board the Enterprise a rather disgruntled Kirk steps into a turbo lift, Chekov steps quickly into the turbo lift Kirk: {To Chekov} Commander. Transporter Room Three. Chekov: Bridge. There is a momentary silence as the turbo lift streaks to its destination. The mechanical whirr of the turbo lift is the only sound. Chekov: {Slowly} Keptin, is it worth it? Kirk: Commander? Chekov: having command of your own starship? Kirk: You're referring to Sulu's command obviously. Chekov: Awviously. Kirk looks more worn now than ever before, he composes himself and turns to Chekov for a second. Kirk: Trust me, [The Elevator stops] Its not what it used to be. Chekov: Keptin? The Doors of the turbolift close on his words. And cut to the opening of the transporter room doors. McCoy stands in the room arms folded, a look of disdain on his face equalled only by the look on the face of Kirk. Kirk takes a stand next to McCoy & Spock and there is a long silence. Spock: Captain. [almost asking, whats wrong?] McCoy: Jim. Kirk: Starfleet is putting us out to pasture. Because of the Klingons are putting a hefty price on my staying in Starfleet, weve been assigned to transport duty gentlemen. McCoy feeling the heavyness of Kirk's words tries to lighten the mood. McCoy: So once ar, {a beat} Why would we be intrusted to simulate transport for a stannious based xenovoric envoy preferring to sustain dorsally? McCoy: {To Jim but pointed at Spock} He's still under warrantee isn't he Jim. Kirk: Gentlemen, your attempt at houmor is duly noted, There is a COLD pause. McCoy: [Softly]: Sorry. [A doble Beat] Im a doctor, not a comedian. Spock raises an eyebrow in agreement. The shot cuts to the hands of transporter chief activating the transporter. The circular transporter pads hm and then a blue glow encircles the pad. In a shimmering glow of the transporter beam Kirk is able to barely make out the face of his passenger for this mission. She stands on the transporter platform for a moment. The air becomes electric. McCoy: {Softly} Well, well, Dr. Carol Marcus Marcus: Dr. McCoy, Mr. Spock, {She steps of the transporter pad and walks towards Kirk. There is a feeling Marcus wants to say more but doesn't} Captain. Kirk: {Softly and only to Carol} Jim, {He starts} The shot is just of Kirk, the rest are just voices. Spock: You see Doctor we have not been giv.. {Suddenly} Doctor McCoy Kicking a superior officer is punishable by section Kirk: {Moving only his eyes toward them, a small smirk on his face} Mr. Spock, Bones. {Bones and Spock glance at each other and McCoy puts on an artificially large grin as Spock looks as happy as vulcans look. (Okay he raises an eyebrow)} [Kirk under his breath, almost showing off for Carol Marcus] And to think I turned down command of the Avitar for this. Marcus [Ice Cold]:May I been shown to my quarters Captain. We have an important mission ahead of us. Ext. Shot The Enterprise sits in stardock as the Uss Excelsior pulls into the bay work continues on the Enterprise and other ships in the bay as cargo pods streak through hold of the massive stardock. In conference room seven of the Enterprise Kirk, Marcus, Uhura, Scotty and McCoy sit Spock Enters. McCoy: Can We get this underway Kirk: Have you got something to do Doctor? McCoy: As A matter of fact I do Spock: Navigaation Banks linked in Captian. Kirk: Are we ready to leave Stardock Scotty? {He finishes as spock takes a seat} Scotty: She can be ready now Captain, all systems are up to 80%. Give me thirty minutes and she'll be purring like a newborn kitty. Kirk: [Acknowledging the rather interesting analogy] Are We Combat ready? Scotty: Aye. That she will captain. She'll be ready for anything those Klingons can throw at us Captain. Kirk: Thank You Mr. Scott, {Clicking on the communicator} Mr. Chekov proceed on departure procedures and lay in course for Epsilon Alpha as soon as possible, and notify me. Kirk Out. {Looking up at Spock, Click off.} Dr. Marcus; Activating a 3-D hologram representation, Marcus begins. Marcus: [50.220.32] Epsilon Alpha is a class M planet, Cataloged 4121.1, no natural satellites, no remarkable ores, Uncharted. Primary use now is an outpost mining and survey colony under the command of Colin Kellogg. Operation status, Classified. Spock: {Hands folded, swivelling towards doctor Marcus} Then I don't understand Doctor, what is so important about this particular planet? Marcus: I am not a liberty to reveal that information at this time Mr. Spock. {to Spock who's Sitting Contemplative} McCoy: But needless to say starfleet found it neccessary to commandeer the Enterprise before we even reached stardock. Kirk: As you know well be running blind and flag-down, Meaning no friend or foe identification codes Scotty: Aye and we wont know where we are till we get there.. Kirk: Exactly, The only thing that we know for sure is that we'll be heading into the delta and I want every department on this ship at peak performance, understood? All nod in agreement except Spock who keeps starring at the 3D halogram. Kirk: Something wrong Spock? McCoy: Maybe we can trade him in for a newer model Jim Kike: Bones Spock: [a beat] A momentary diversion Captain, Kirk: Would You Care To Elab.. The sound of the intercom breaks the session, Chekov: {Over speaker} All sections report operational and ready for departure. Kirk: Received Mr. Chekov --I'll be right there, Everyone, to your stations. Everyone leaves except Spock, Kirk and Marcus Spock: {Only to Kirk} one thing for certain "Jim" as you stated this mission well take us well into the delta; the area adjoining the federation, the romulans and Kirk: The Klingons, understood Spock. You Have the conn. Spock nods and departs. Kirk looks down at the conference table and then at Carol. Kirk: Carol. Marcus:[Leaving the table and heading for the door] I have duties to attend to, Captain you'll excuse me [She starts as Kirk grabs onto her arm] Kirk: Carol, I... Marcus:[Flustered] I must Kirk: Carol [Pausing] we need to talk Marcus:[She breaks free and walks toward the door and stops] Damn You. [A beat] He was MY son, 20 years of my life and then you waltzed back into my life and you took him, [a beat] you didnt call, [a beat] you didnt even come to his funeral and most of all you didnt care. Kirk: Thats not fair, Our son, I would have given my life for him... Marcus: Thats a lie! You gave your life to Starfleet 20 years ago. "OUR son"?, How dare You! [Hurt] You want to talk?, talk to Spock! Not Fair? I'll tell you whats not fair,[a long hard pause] Its not fair that it was him instead of you! On those words Marcus turns and storms out of the conference room. Standing in the door way looking back at him tearfully Marcus: If giving your life would fill this emptyness in my life[clutching at her chest], If it would bring my boy back, Id gladly take you up on that offer! Now live with that! End Of Part II of VIII Send All Comments To E.Glover In Care of this station.
