  * CIA LINKS TO RECENTLY EXPOSED EUROPEAN SECRET PARA-MILITARY 
ORGANIZATIONS, started in the 50's by the US and NATO.



  In the last 12 months Europe has seen a number of revelations about the 
workings of state-sponsored secret services. Somehow these went unreported 
by American media. In August 1990, ex-CIA agent Richard Brenneke alleged on 
Italian television that the CIA financed the secret P-2 Masonic Lodge as 
well as the Italian Secret Services in order to foment terrorism and 
destabilize state institutions in various European countries. Brenneke 
claimed that as a CIA operative under George Bush he had been in direct 
contact with the P-2, which had been accused of a host of crimes. One of 
Brenneke's jobs was to transfer money.

  A November 1990 discovery of documents written by former Italian President 
Aldo Moro caused another shakeup. According to the Moro Papers, 
then-Interior Minister Francisco Cossiga, now Italy' President, was under 
strong influence of the P-2 Masonic Lodge. Also revealed was the existence 
throughout Europe of a super-secret paramilitary arm, known as Operation 
Gladio, organized in 1956 by the American intelligence services. Gladio was 
initiated as a resistance army in case of a Soviet invasion, but used 
against Communists and other left- wing forces in the continent. The Italian 
Communist Party charged that Gladio was involved in the killings of 143 
people between 1969-1984. Despite calls for dismantling the covert army, the 
organizations' coordinators met in October 1990.

  Other revelations included the fact that Sweden, a supposedly neutral 
country, has been collecting intelligence for the American CIA and National 
Security Agency for many years. It was also revealed that the CIA helped 
Swedish police install microphones in the homes of Kurds, at the time 
suspected of involvement in the 1986 murder of Swedish Prime Minister Olaf 
Palme. In France the existence of a special anti-gay police wing was brought 
to light when it was accused of killing a gay pastor.
