                     All-Music Guide Biography

Considered the Australian Kings of Heavy Metal, they have delivered
the goods since the early 70s with their no-frills rock & roll.
Brothers (and guitarists) Angus and Malcolm Young formed the band
with vocalist Bon Scott, bassist Cliff Williams, and drummer Phil
Rudd. They played in dingy clubs and eventually found a record label.
Then in the mid 70s, with the popularity of pop group Little River
Band, people in Europe and the US were looking for other bands from
the land down under.,Atco Records signed AC/DC and released HIGH
VOLTAGE in 1976. Throughout the late 70s, the band toured the US and
Europe, getting massive attention from audiences weary of Led
Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Like those bands, AC/DC were influenced by
the music they listened to as kids and played it louder and more
vicious. In 1978, they released the live album IF YOU WANT BLOOD,
YOU'VE GOT IT, with one of the sickest -- and most effective --
record covers in rock history. The music, as raw as the record cover,
soon found airplay on many US radio stations. But the album that
broke them through was HIGHWAY TO HELL. The guitar work was up to
par, Bon Scott's voice at its peak, and the songs well-known staples
in the bands live sets. Linked to satanism by some critics, they got
more attention than ever.,Bon Scott died in an alcohol related
accident, and Brian Johnson joined the band before they released BACK
IN BLACK in 1980 (with a black cover honoring their late vocalist).
This album crossed them over into the mainstream and made them
superstars around the world, influencing many young musicians,In the
early 80s, AC/DCs US popularity faltered, but by the late 80s, with
albums such as FLY ON THE WALL and BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO, they were
getting airplay again. They've never changed their formula -- they
play the same raunchy rock & roll they played in the bars of
Australia, and they can play with equal passion in Madison Square
Garden or Wembley Stadium. ~ John Book

When Australia's AC/DC blasted onto the music scene during the mid
70s, they were loud, crude, salacious (did I mention LOUD?), and
audiences all over the world ate up their scorch-the-earth policy
toward rock & roll. The bazooka roar of the Young brothers' twin
guitars and Bon Scott's snarling vocals (they were labeled
"crotchgrind" by Chuck Eddy) made them one of the most popular
hard-rock bands in the world (with the platinum albums to prove it).
Even on a bad night they were very nearly the equals of the Stones or
the Who on their best.,The band nearly fell apart when singer Bon
Scott died in 1980, but they rallied around his successor Brian
Johnson, who managed to sound like Scott with an even greater vocal
boom. In the 90s they show no inclination toward lowering the
 decibels. ~ Tom Graves,

Actually an EP of Bon Scott-period material but nonetheless some of
AC/DC's best and most blistering blues. In particular the title song
and an incendiary "Baby, Please Don't Go" are worth the admission. ~

 ------- AMG Album Reviews -------
Fans have been clamoring for a new AC/DC live album for 14 years,
since 1978's solid IF YOU WANT BLOOD, YOU'VE GOT IT. Now, they've got
it: AC/DC LIVE, a gargantuan two-CD set that harkens back to the
vanished double-album extravaganzas of the 70s and early 80s.
Twenty-two songs, more than two hours of music, and enough
blues-based, three-chord, 4/4 rock & roll to overload even the most
ardent fan of Australia's biggest music export. "Hell's Bells," "You
Shook Me All Night Long," "Who Made Who," and "Back in Black" are all
included, along with the Bon Scott-era gems "Whole Lotta Rosie," "Let
There Be Rock," and "TNT." My main beef is that the illusion of a
continuous concert is not even perfunctorily sustained. Fadeouts
between each song seriously damage the atmosphere and momentum the set
tries to create. Other than that, the performances are top-notch, with
Brian Johnson shrieking less than on the last few studio efforts. And,
of course, there's Angus Young, slaughtering his guitar for all it's
worth, wringing every last note from its sweaty neck. AC/DC LIVE may
not make you feel like you were really there, but it's still a
heavyweight offering of great live rock & roll. ~ Don Kaye, Request

Consumate metal -- dark, menacing and powerful as hell. Includes "You
Shook Me All Night Long." ~ Jas Obrecht

Following Bon Scott's death, AC/DC came back with reinforcements and
released another truly great hard-rock album. Brian Johnson ups the
ante with his own tough-as-tacks vocals. Robert "Mutt" Lange's
production on BACK IN BLACK remains one of the most powerful in all of
hard rock. All in all, this is great diamond-hard, full-throttle rock
 & roll. ~ Tom Graves

Bon Scott's swan song. ~ Jas Obrecht

 A classic of hard-rock/heavy metal
noise-grunge-skronk-pillage-and-burn. Earlier AC/DC albums had great
riffs and killer chords, but HIGHWAY TO HELL proved the boys could
write too. Not a clinker on this thudfest, and songs like "Highway to

 ------- AMG Album Reviews -------
Classic AC/DC guitar formula and muscular drumming. ~ Jas Obrecht

The band unarguably slipped a few notches in the late 80s, but THE
RAZOR'S EDGE brought them back into the 90s with a vengeance. Great
hooks, great sound, and a great single, "Money Talks." Whoever said
they sold out? ~ Tom Graves
