                     All-Music Guide Biography

Centered around wildman flutist, singer, songwriter Ian Anderson,
Jethro Tull has been churning out an oddball synthesis of British
Isles folk and progressive hard rock since the late 60s. During their
heyday (the 70s), Tull became one of the biggest concert draws, due
to Anderson and the band's clownish stage antics and their amazingly
complex interplay.,Their earlier albums, THIS WAS (#62), STAND UP
(#20), and BENEFIT (#11), laid the groundwork for Tull's success, but
it was 1971's AQUALUNG (#7) that put them over the top.,Not unlike
many bands attempting to take rock to new levels through extended
pieces, Tull released two back-to-back albums (THICK AS A BRICK,
PASSION PLAY) containing one musical piece on each. Unlike many of
those bands, both of these albums went to #1.,Jethro Tull also
managed a couple of hits with "Living in the Past" (#11) and "Bungle
in the Jungle" (#12). The band continues to release albums and tour.

This is a distilled version of tracks taken from Tull's boxed set.
Broken down into four parts, it includes a smattering of hits, live
tracks, and some key album sides. It might not be definitive, but it
does give the listener a good idea of the band's musical range. ~ Rick
 Clark

Jethro Tull's 4-CD celebration of their quarter of a century in the
music business is only worth the time of hardcore Tull fans. Two discs
are full-length live performances (both discs contain two of the same
songs), one disc is full of alternate versions of their most famous
tracks, and a final disc of new remixes of "classic" tracks (which
includes the third appearance of "A Song for Jeffrey" on the four
CDs). Casual fans are much better served by one of the smaller
 collections. ~ All-Music Guide

With the addition of ex-Roxy Music violinist and keyboardist Eddie
Jobson and ex-Fairport Convention bassist Dave Pegg, Tull produced
their most overt (and fully realized) folk/rock album. "Batteries Not

Their most convincing pure-rock effort. ~ Dan Heilman

It was with AQUALUNG that Tull became a staple on FM rock radio,
thanks to dynamic riff-heavy tracks like "My God," "Hymn 43,"
"Locomotive Breath," "Cross-eyed Mary," "Wind-Up," and the title
track. Thematically, many of these songs were vehicles for Anderson's
railings about how organized religion had restricted man's
relationship with God. ~ Rick Clark

If you've never quite gotten into Tull, move on to the next review,
because this album won't change your mind. But if you're still on
these British rustics wavelength, you'll be pleasantly smitten with
CATFISH RISING. Ian Anderson, their raffish leader and
multi-instrumentalist, has written a varied batch of material here in
a potpourri of styles, from sprightly acoustic jigs to lead weighted
rock, all bearing his unmistakable stamp. It isn't Tull's most
cohesive album, but because it's not tethered to concept, some people
will actually find it easier to enjoy than the group's more
pretentious masterworks. ~ Parke Puterbaugh, Stereo Review, December,
 1991

LIVING IN THE PAST was essentially an anthology of key tracks from
Tull's first five albums. Included are extended live tracks as well as
popular numbers like "Christmas Song," "Song for Jeffery," "Hymn 43,"
and their biggest hit, "Living in the Past" (#11). The CD version has
curiously omitted two of Tull's better early tracks -- "Teacher" and
"Bouree." Besides "Hymn 43," LIVING IN THE PAST doesn't include any
key tracks from AQUALUNG. ~ Rick Clark

 ------- AMG Album Reviews -------
... the tracks are closely woven and most brandish winning hooks and
smoking electric guitar ... Ian Anderson, Tull's celebrated frontman,
has honed his multiple abilities to a fine edge ... his flute playing
is infectious, his vocals right on the money, and his production work
is at its finest. Moreover, he's achieved more of a live sound than he
has in the past ... he has also kept his music safely in vogue with
the mainstream hard rock/heavy metal scene. If the disc has a glaring
shortcoming, it's that it lacks humor. ~ Clifford Meth, Rock & Roll
 Disc.

On SONGS FROM THE WOOD, Tull's aggressive rock interplay and Ian
Anderson's fascination with early folk melodies from the British Isles
produced a particularly appealing collection of songs. "Cup of
Wonder," and The Whistler" are particularly successful. ~ Rick Clark

Tull's second album was as impressive as THIS WAS. Anderson's flute
dominates this outing. The instrumental "Bouree" became a signature
song for the band's early sound. Other highlights included "A New Day
Yesterday," "Fat Man," and "Nothing Is Easy." (Also available as a
Mobile Fidelity Ultradisc) ~ Rick Clark
