                WAR-WEARY BLUES
                  By Lucillus
(Sung to the tune of "I'd rather be a Cowboy")

I left Rome in the springtime
When the flowers were starting to bloom
The blood-soaked earth to feed them
        I couldn't leave too soon.
My heart and head were weary
I've seen too much of war
And although I am a warrior
I just couldn't take no more.

I wonder if I can forget now
        All the fighting for awhile
Then lay me down beside a small stream
And lose myself in some sweet lady's smile.

         It's not that I regretted
All the fighting I had to do
        It just seemed never ending
And my mind was full of you
The look upon your sweet face
          The day we said goodbye
         I hope that you remember
        I know I will until I die.

I wonder if I can forget now
        All the fighting for awhile
Then lay me down beside a small stream
And lose myself with the memory of your smile.
No matter how hard I try to forget you
Your memory will always be there in my mind
No matter how far I go in the world now
A woman like you I know I'll never find.

Oh, and I miss you so this evening
With the full moon on the rise
           And if I die tomorrow
There'll be tears still in my eyes.
But I hear the enemy coming
As I raise my weary head
           Maybe it will end now
And I can rest among the dead.

I wonder if I can forget now
But peace is something I'll never see
And soon at last it will be over
Then I hope my friends can come and bury me.
