Ex-religious teacher cleared of sex abuse

SAN DIEGO -- A jury on Friday acquitted a former Sunday school teacher of
charges that he raped, sodomized and tortured nine young children. After seven
months of graphic testimony, the Superior Court jury sided with Dale Akiki, who
laid his head on the table and sobbed as the verdict was read. Akiki, 36, had
been charged with 35 counts in the case, the longest criminal trial in San
Diego County history. The youngsters were 3 and 4 years old at the time of the
alleged abuse in 1988 and 1989 at the evangelical Faith Chapel in Spring
Valley. Akiki's supporters argued that parents and therapists had brainwashed
the children through months of suggestive questioning.
