TL: open letter against THORP in European Parliament Open Letter to the British Goverment SO: Greenpeace Germany, Civil Nukes, (GP) DT: July 14, 1993 Keywords: nuclear weapons military power uk europe / THE THORP REPROCESSING PLANT IN SELLAFIELD MUST NOT BEGIN OPERATION The signatories of this letter support the demand of the Irish government and the Irish ministry for energy for a shutdown of the British reprocessing plant Sellafield. Considering the already huge safety problems of the existing plant in Sellafield, the new THORP plant must not be commis- sioned. THORP will emit radioactive Krypton 85 into the environment which will cause up to 15 deaths per year in Europe and up to 60 deaths worldwide, according to estimates of experts. It is estimated that THORP will discharge 27.8 million Curie per year. According to official sources the catastrophe of Chernobyl released 50 million Curie. The Paris Commission as an institution for the international regulation of radioactive discharges into the sea has also asked for THORP not to be commissioned. Putting THORP into operation will increase aerial discharges by 1100% and mari-ne discharges by 900%. This is an unacceptable pollution for the whole of Europe. We ask the British government to stop THORP. Signatories ..... ..... ----------
