No rubble. No fallen walls of Jericho. In fact, two Italian archaeologists said Wednesday, a month-long dig turned up no evidence to support the biblical story that the ancient West Bank city was taken over by the Israelite commander Joshua. According to the Old Testament, Joshua and his troops stormed the city around 1400 B.C. The Bible says the walls of Jericho tumbled down after Joshua's priests circled them, blowing trumpets, for seven days. But two University of Rome archaeologists said their dig this spring at Jericho, 10 miles east of Jerusalem, found no layer of rubble and ash or other evidence that the city was sacked during the time of Joshua. As for the walls, Lorenzo Nigro and Nicolo Marchetti believe them to be intact, based on the section they have excavated. Observant Jews revere Joshua as Moses' successor who led the Israelites into the Promised Land, with the battle of Jericho a key moment in the campaign. The Palestinian envoy to Italy, Nemer Hammad, said he hoped the expedition's findings would not have negative political repercussions. "History must be respected," he said. The dig was the first foreign expedition in the West Bank since Palestinian self-rule began in 1994. --- * Origin: John Brawley's Quantum Bait Shop, No. 7 (1:123/67.7) SEEN-BY: 10/3 12/12 24/888 102/2 943 105/72 106/2000 114/262 441 124/1 SEEN-BY: 130/1 1008 133/2 143/1 147/34 2021 167/166 170/400 202/1207 213/213 SEEN-BY: 218/2 42 801 890 900 901 907 261/1108 270/101 275/429 280/1 169 SEEN-BY: 282/1 62 283/120 284/29 300/603 310/666 322/739 323/107 324/278 SEEN-BY: 343/600 346/250 352/3 356/18 371/42 377/86 382/92 387/5 388/1 SEEN-BY: 396/1 45 690/660 730/2 2401/0 2442/0 3603/420 3612/41 300 3615/50 SEEN-BY: 3619/25 3632/21 3651/9 3652/1 3667/1 3828/2 @PATH: 123/67 302 43 270/101 396/1 218/907 801 890
