Title: On the Origins of Derf
Reply: This message has 1 reply

I think Chris/Liquid Jesus, Tal, and I deserve the credit for the spread
of Derfism. It never would have gone very far beyond a personal joke if
the almighty (!?) Derf himself didn't make such a big deal about it. He
regarded it as the most horrendous personal offense possible, so
essentially he added flame to his own cremation fire.

The usage of Derf, however, isn't solely a local phenomenon. On a BBS in
Blacksburg, VA, there is a sub devoted entired to Derfism, with
basically the same feelings about Derf as we have. Except, for them Derf
is a single 'entity' (whereas here we often refer to a group of Derfs,
or multiple individual Derlike persons [still recognizing the true
father of Derfism however]). (The sub is called: Pertaining to ////,
\\\\, the anti-////, or anti-\\\\. The slashes are literal, as they
never use the sacred word save for explaining to newcomers their
meaning.)

A truely local and gradiose (sp?) phenomenon can be found in the
DerfLink, however. The DerfLink, or DerfLink Interface, as it is called,
is the most holy object of Derfists. The mystical and ever elusive
DerfLink allows any object or number of objects to be connected together
to form a never-before-seen working product. For example, if one desired
steak and had a cow, one could connect the barbeque and cow together
using the DerfLink. At the touch of a button, you could have an instant,
succulent steak. Add a wire brush before pressing the button, and the
grill will also be clean afterwards! Finally, by installing an EEG
meter, the DerfLink will read your brainwave pattern and determine you
preference while cooking the steak to make it perfect! (Surely know you
see why the DerfLink is the most holy object of Derfists!)

Of course, the DerfLink could be designed by none other than the great
lord Derf himself. In his infinite wisdom, he chose not to reveal the
DerfLink to a wholly unprepared world.

The tale of the origins of the DerfLink (extended version) is for
another day..
