A Ph.D. Dissertation by Havok Halcyon

To begin we will start out with a thorough explanation of the different
cult movies available to the common movie viewer followed by my personal
contribution to this field.

Suburbia - Punk youths live outside of LA or San Francisco. Rather
interesting except for rather cheesy effects (i.e. the occurrence
when a dog eats a baby).

Repo Man - Teenager becomes a repo man and runs into conspiracy with
government and dead aliens in the trunk of a Malibu.

Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail - A cult movie favorite that
spoofs on Arthur Pendragon and The Round Table. The Teenagers
say it is awesome. (The above film is given as a concrete
example of the genre of cinema that is produced by Monty Python.
Several movies have been produced by him and all are popular
with the high school and college level crowds.)

Little Shop of Horrors - There are two versions, the older one, the Roger
Corman version, starring Jack Nicholas as the dentist is reputed
to be better than the newer version with Steve Martin. Also
          comes in stage production form.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T - Written by Dr. Seuss, this film is about a
sadistic piano teacher that decides to take over the world. A
          favorite among the post-pubescent-but-not-yet-able-to-drink-
          crowd.

It - A made for TV movie, this film about some kind of supernatural force
that appears in the form of Pennywise the clown, and then
precedes to kill children. Based on a novel by Steven King.

Amazon Women on the Moon - A movie that is made up of many skits with some
          form of comedic background.

Miracle Mile - A newer film that concentrates on the nuclear holocaust and
end of the world kinda thing.

The Harlan Ellison Movie - A mythological movie that is reputed to be in
existence, possibly under a different title. It keeps up the
flavor of Harlan Ellison as per his books. (For the interested
or ignorant, some of his books are Shatterday, Angry Candy,
Dreams with Sharp Teeth, Deathbird Stories, The Essential
          Ellison, and others.)

Penn and Teller Get Killed - This movie exhibits how the thoughtlessness of
practical jokes can lead to dangerous circumstances. In
this movie's case, about 15 suicides. (Also suggested is "Cruel
Tricks for Dear Friends" for further evidence.) Highly
          recommended.

Wizards - Animated film by the creator of Fritz the Cat. A recommended
film for those interested in social commentary aligned with good
humor, nifty Lord of the Rings shit, and Demon Nazi
          Stormtroopers.

Eat the Rich - Very political, very funny, very weird Brit film. A gay
black guy leads a revolution with a horse and feeds the elite to
the non-elite in his restaurant that he takes over.

Closet Land - It's got the cool guy from Robin Hood and Die Hard (Alan
Rickman) in it. Not really FUN to watch since it depicts
brainwashing and totalitarian government, but it quite
interesting, though scary in the psychological sense. Very
          strange and very well done.

Clockwork Orange - A pessimistic about the future and our hero, Alex whose
interests are rape, ultra-violence, and Beethoven. Well done and
VERY weird. Sci-fi or drama. Also a book.

Where the Buffalo Roam - Gonzo Journalist Hunter S. Thompson is played by
Bill Murray as the drug and alcohol dependent anarchist. Really
weird. Hunter S. Thompson is still alive and writing books.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Don't rent this, go see it at a theater.
That's all I'm gonna say. This is the ultimate cult movie.

Heavy Metal - Fantastic animation. It's about a glowing ball called Lok-
Nor that is completely evil and ruins peoples' lives.

Taxi Driver - A taxi driver goes psycho in New York City and decides to do
all kinds of weird things. Stars DeNiro and directed by
          Scorcese. Drama.

Parents - Kid thinks his parents are cannibals and finds evidence to back
          it up. Randy Quaid. Horror.

Kid - Kid tries to avenge his parents death when the killers don't kill him
when he was younger. Leave this one till one of the last, when
          you're completely bored.

Fool's Fire - An evil looking puppet movie based on Edger Allen Poe's
Hopfrog. Really weird, especially the part when the nobles
discuss what is best to whip oneself with - corn cobs to
goose necks.

Rock and Rule - Animation like Heavy Metal about Mot who tries to create a
          demon with his computer.

Vampire's Kiss - Nicholas Cage thinks he is a vampire but is he?

Naked Lunch - A very odd movie starring Peter Weller (Robocop) about a
writer caught up in drugs that was based on an almost
autobiographical book. Some call it crap, others call it
garbage. My favorite part is about the man who taught his
          asshole to talk.

Heathers - Now a fairly popular film, it is a dark comedy about a guy
(Christian Slater) who starts killing off stuck-up girls and
jocks around school and makes them seem like suicides. Also
          stars Winoda Rider.

Jacob's Ladder - A pretty recent film about a guy (Tim Robbins) that finds
out the government drugged all these soldiers during Vietnam
which made them run around killing each other.

Barton Fink - Screen writer with writer's block and eccentric salesman form
a plot that makes sense in the beginning that goes to God knows
          where.

Toxic Avenger - I, II, & III are just about some geek that is made into a
toxic super hero. Pretty cheesy special effects but pretty
good flicks if you're not too skeptical.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - It's a cult movie for some reason about
these mutant tomatoes that start to take over the world, or a
city, or something. I dunno, I though it was lame.

Night of the Living Dead - In this case we are talking about the original
though the remake is pretty good too. A great film with great
plot that all comes together to give a package of symbolism and
          human nature.

An American Werewolf in London - Pretty short flick but was a landmark in
special effects in its time. Two college guys go backpacking in
Europe and one becomes a werewolf.

Popcorn - This movie was suggested by some teenagers, but I'm assuming that
there was sarcasm intended when they said it. But I'll stick it
in here anyhow. I personally thought it sucked.

Apocalypse Now - An incredible movie that barely qualifies as a war movie
since it is so surreal. Robert Duvall is in it I think.(Also
recommended as a side note, the book, The Heart of Darkness.
Just thought I would stick it in here.)

They Live - A neato sci-fi movie about aliens disguised as human that are
trying to take over the world. Has Rowdy Roddy Piper in it.
(And a rather stupid fight seen between him and this other guy.
The fight seen is reputedly rivaled by another fight scene in the
          movie, Last Hour.)

Fright Night - This movie has a sequel both of which are good vampire
          movies.

Something Wicked This Way Comes - A film about a carnival that comes to
town to steal people's souls. Awesome bad guy.

Alien - A fantastic horror film though I personally thought the sequel
Aliens was far and away better. Both are incredible movies and
should be rented immediately. The final in the trilogy, Aliens3
          is supposedly a disappointment.

V - A weird series that was made for TV in about 1985. The story is about
some aliens that say they want to help Earth but are really
stealing it's water and people for food. Pretty good.

The Star Wars Trilogy - If you don't know what this is than shoot yourself
now. We HAD to mention it.

Drugstore Cowboy - Life as a junkie. Weird, pretty serious, but good.
          Stars Matt Dillon.

Streetfight - A movie that mixes animation and live action. Warning: This
movie offends everyone at some point or another.

Hell Comes to Frogtown - So inanely stupid that it's funny, though not what
one would call a cult classic.

Invaders From Mars - A meteor makes everyone in a town start acting weird
so a kid tries to find out what's going on.

Cat's Eye - A Stephen King classic about a cat's life and all the weird
          things that happen around it.

Hellraiser - It is a trilogy from the mind of Clive Barker. A great series
          of horror flicks.

Shocker - from Wes Craven, the guy who did the Nightmare on Elm Street
movies. A psychotic killer gets electrocuted and becomes an
electric force that starts hopping through people's bodies.

My Own Private Idaho - A totally bizarre movie starring River Phoenix and
Keeanu Reeves who play male prostitutes. Too weird to explain.

Slacker - A story that takes place over the course of twenty-four hours in
Texas. It is for the viewer that enjoys watching the weird show
that is life. For those it is great, for others it is a bore.
Has some commentary on society and the movie was conceived by the
guy who wrote Generation-X; a book many 18-27 year-olds can
          relate to.

Candyman - Not exactly a "cult" movie, but a horror flick from Clive Barker
that is one of the scariest movies to come out in a LOOONG time.
Even die hard I-DARE-you-to-scare-me types should jump out of
their seats for this one. That was in the movie theater though.

Mr. Frost - Stars Jeff Goldblum who has killed twenty four people via
torture. He does it to prove that Pure Evil (who he claims to
be) is stronger than science. Not scary, but quite weird.

Insignificance - A really strange film that makes absolutely no sense but
has a couple interesting scenes in it.

True Stories - A film starring John Goodman by David Byrne (former leader
of the Talking Heads. It is weird just for the sake of being
weird. If you liked their music, you'll probably like the flick.

The Hunger - A modern age vampire movie starring David Bowie, Catherine
Denue, and what's-her-face from Thelma and Louise.

Here Are A Bunch of Films That I Either:
---------------------------------------
     A) Didn't know what they were about but heard they were kinda weird..
     B) Was too lazy to find out what they were about...
     C) Was too lazy to type what they were about...

Forbidden Planet - Got me.
This Island Earth - Ditto.
Blue Velvet - Also a book. Sex in it?
Kentucky Fried Movie - I think it has Dick Butkis in it.
The Spinal Tap - A thing it has something to do with the group.
Talk Radio - A weird radio host.
The Terror From Mars - A bet it's about something from Mars.
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers - Probably pretty similar.

My Contribution: I've derived from the study of cult movies that they are
necessary for the diet of a young growing teenager. Especially if he/she
plans to go to college since you'll seem oh-so-smart if you know about all
this stuff and especially if you have your own collection of cult movies
for all to watch. God forbid my future roommate reads this file, I'll be
screwed.

                                        - The Soup Dragons
(A Rolling Stones remake, but TSD do it better)
