PART ONE - GENERAL QUESTIONS
=============================================================

1a. What does 'Nine Inch Nails' mean?

Some possible explanations...
a) The fingernails of the Statue of Liberty are nine inches long.
b) The nails used to nail shut a coffin are nine inches long.
(and the most popular)...
c) Jesus was crucified with nine inch nails, except for the nail through the
feet, which was a foot.

1b. "What is the significance of the 'Halo' numbers?"

The "Halo" designations on every official NIN release, as far as I can tell,
designate the order in which they were released. What are the halos?
one: Down In It two: Pretty Hate Machine
three: Head like a Hole four: Sin
five: broken six: fixed
seven: March of the Pigs eight: the downward spiral
nine: Closer to god

1c. "Is Nine Inch Nails really only one person?"

Yes and no. The majority of studio work is done by Trent Reznor alone.
There are exceptions to this - most of _Broken_ and _The_Downward_Spiral were
co-created by Flood, a production artist who has produced such stuff as U2's
"Achtung Baby" and "Zooropa", Curve's "Doppelganer", Depeche Mode's
"Violator" and "Songs of Faith and Devotion", and parts of Nitzer Ebb's
last three albums, "Ebbhead", "Showtime" and "Belief". After the recording
of _Broken_, Trent said he and Flood didn't plan on working together..
"burned out" with each other. Apparently, this is not the case.. since
Flood ended up producing The Downward Spiral. Also on _Broken_, Martin
Atkins and Chris Vrenna contributed live drums to "Wish" and "Gave Up".
On _Pretty Hate Machine_, Flood helped with "Head Like A Hole" and
"Terrible Lie", while other big-names Adrian Sherwood and Keith LeBlanc
helped with "Down In It" and "Sin", among others. John Fryer and others also
helped in various ways with this album, but not so much in the creative
aspect as much as the technical aspect. On _The_Downward_Spiral_, the most
prominantly featured outside musician was Adrian Belew, perhaps best known
for his guitar work on David Bowie's album "Low". Belew contributed many
guitar tracks to the album, on "Mr. Self Destruct", "The Becoming". Stephen
Perkins, formerly the drummer for Jane's Addiction and currently with Porno
for Pyros, contributed drums to "I Do Not Want This". Flood himself is
listed as playing "special hi-hat programming" on "Closer" and and arp 2600
on "The Becoming". Danny Lohner, who is now touring with the live band as a
bassist/keyboardist, played guitar on "Big man with a gun", the same track
on which Tommy Lee (unknown to me) played a "steakhouse". Andy Kubiszewski
(also unkown to me) played drums on "The Downward Spiral", a role Chris
Vrenna filled on "Hurt".
Live NIN is an entirely different matter. For the Lollapalloza 1
tour, Trent supported himself with a very real band, including the late
Jeff Ward from Lard, Richard Patrick on guitar, and James Wooley on
keyboard. Woolley is touring with the live band. The live NIN lineup
changes a lot - at one point it included Martin Atkins, at another point, in
the early days of the band in Cleveland, apparently it was just Trent
and Richard Patrick, possibly with Chris Vrenna, with whom Trent lived with
for a period of time in Cleveland.

1d. "What is it with Trent whispering?"

Well, he likes to whisper. In songs like "Sanctified" on PHM, towards the
end, there's some whispering, but it's not Trent. There, it's a sample from
"Midnight Express", directed by Oliver Stone. The sample is of the main
character reading a letter.

"Dear Mom and Dad, this is the hardest letter I've ever had to write. I'd
hoped somehow to get out of this quickly so that you'd never have to know
about it, but that just isn't possible now. I don't know what's going to
happen, but what can I say to you? Will "I'm sorry" make a difference? Will
it ease the pain? The shame you must be feeling? Forgive me. Please."

Also, as far as whispering goes, about 30 seconds into "Too Physical," Trent
whispers something. Most people seem to agree that he is whispering "Eat your
heart out, Steve" in reference to Steve Gottlieb, TVT's manager/owner. This
is whispered on this particular song because it is a cover and a hidden
track, and evidently, they had to go through a bunch of copyright bullshit to
be able to release it. (It is well known that Trent and Steve have had their
disputes over copyright laws and over who's in charge.)

A whisper can be far more menacing than a scream.. especially in the
killer's psyche he 'crawls into' in "Piggy" (Downward Spiral).. barely
moving his lips to warn us, "Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't
care." Perhaps it all has something to do with the fact that he lives
in and recorded parts of PHM, Broken, and all of TDS in the Bel Air
house where the Manson Cult murders took place in 1969 ...

1e. "What was Trent's whole connection to..."

"...Pigface?"
Pigface (in case you didn't know) is a huge band consisting of basically
anyone who wants to be in it at the time... Trent was involved with the
recodring of the first Pigface album, _Gub_, on which appeared "Suck" in its
first (and best, IMHO) incarnation. Trent also contirbuted to rhythm/noise
track "Bushmaster". Trent then toured with Pigface for at least a short
time, appeared performing "Suck" in the _Glitch_ home video and then (this
is where the info becomes hazy) was apparently kicked out, some say because
he tried to take over the band. Trent apparently no longer has any
connection with Pigface. As an aside, it is interesting to note that
Pigface has always given authorship credits for "Suck" (it appeared on many
live albums after the release of _Gub_) exactly how they appeared on _Gub_.
But on _Broken_ (at least on the 3" mini-disk) the credits are listed as "T.
Reznor / Pigface" - a marked deviation. On the most recent Pigface live
album, "Truth Will Out", the credits simply read "whatever Trent says...
really... no shit."

"...Ministry?"
Some people assert that Trent played on the "In Case You Didn't Feel Like
Showing Up" tour, but he's not listed anywhere in the CD booklet - however,
this was also at the time of his major contract dispute, and if I remeber
correctly, he could tour with whoever he wanted, just couldn't record.
The 1000 Homo DJ's _Supernaut_ EP: Trent's alias for the project was Ike
Krull, credited with guitars on Supernaut, and was likely also responsible
for the "(you know who you are)" appearing in the liner notes. He
originally sang lead vocals on the track, but this is aboutthe point in time
here TVT shit it's pants realizing how much money he could make at other
labels, so they had the vox pulled. A bootleg copy of this original version
is available at your finer local bootleg dealers as the Twin M "Suck" halo
00 bootleg, containing two tracks, "Suck" live off the board, and
"Supernaut" with Trent's vox.

Also, Al Jourgenson from Ministry (alias Hypo Luxa) produced (and
maybe helped create) "Get Down Make Love", the Queen cover that's the b-side
of the "Sin" single.

Trent is listed as an "Additional Cock" on the indside of the Revolting
Cocks (Al, Paul, and Bill frrong: The
Ministry tour that became In Case You.. was 89-90.. about the time PHremixes of
"Just One Fix" and the b-side "Quick Fix" of
the Ministry single for J1F (domestic and import).

"...KMFDM?"

KMFDM is one of many band that Trent has remixed for, whose ranks also
include Megadeth, Curve (fuckin rad), Machines of Loving Grace, and others.

"...Die Warzaw?"

Two current members of NIN, Chris Vrenna and James Woolley, used to
participate in some fashion in the Chicago-based band Die Warzaw. Neither
are apparently involved right now, though.

1f. "What Nine Inch Nails videos exist?"

"Officially", there exist videos for Down In It, Head Like a Hole,
Pinion (blank screen), Wish, Happiness in Slavery, March of the Pigs,
Closer(2 versions), Dead Souls and Burn. A video for SIN was in making,
but TVT refused to finish paying for it, and it was abandoned.
A long-form of Broken in entirety was made by Trent and Peter C(Coil).

1g. "What's the deal with all the record companies buying each
other out, and what does it have to do with NIN?"

Well, apparently WaxTrax! filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in
November of 1992. Meanwhile, Interscope president Jimmy Iovine failed to
get TVT to let Trent leave their label, so he decided to just flat out buy
TVT. Once that was done, Trent felt a lot more comfortable, so he gave them
the finished _Broken_ (he had told TVT president Steve Gottlieb that he
would NEVER make another record for TVT, so he was keeping _Broken_ a secret
until he was out of TVT). TVT then proceeded to take the money given them by
Interscope as a bribe for them to drop legal stuff against Trent and used
a small fraction of that money to buy WaxTrax!'s entire back-catalog, except
for the stuff that had already been bought (like the Front242 back-catalog,
which had been bought by CBS/Sony). This accounts for why there was a
conspicuous absence of WaxTrax! stuff in stores in the early part of 1993,
and why it's all back now with a new little TVT symbol on it...

1h. "What is NOTHING?"

"nothing", as appears with albums, is Reznor's label, located just down the
road from me, in the Tremont area of Cleveland, Ohio. Originally thought to
be some sort of protection or "shell".. now nothing is branching out.. it
already signed Pop Will Eat Itself, Coil, Marilyn Manson, and Prick. Eventually
he wants to stop, and just produce. "There's going to be a point where.. I
can't do both things (production and NIN). I can't do it. I tried. So at
some point I would like to focus on production, which I would really like to
do more of, but Nine Inch Nails eats up every second of my life." -- Another
side note.. Trent is an extremely talented producer - he was an engineer at
The Right Track, where parts of PHM where recorded (in Cleveland).

1i. "Did Trent do remixes?"

Apparently, NIN did a remix on KMFDM's "Light" single. I don't have first
hand knowledge of this.. Perhaps someone else can (Shed some) light? :)
And KMFDM is German for "Kein Mitleid fuer die Mehrheit", meaning "No
Mercy for the Masses" (or "No Pity for the Majority").. not "Dance Music"
or "Kill Mother-Fuckin' Depeche Mode".

On the Machines of Loving Grace single for "Burn Like Brilliant Trash
(at Jackie's Funeral)" Trent does a remix on the single.

1j. "What is PIG?"

Pig -was- Trent's studio in beverly hills. actually, the living room of
the house he used to live in - the manson house, where sharon tate was
murdered. "pig" was written on the wall, in sharon tate's blood. Now,
though, the house no longer exists - the site is now home to Trent's
mansion ...

1k. "Wasn't Trent in a movie?"

Yes, Trent did a Cameo with the Problems, a Cleveland band that he was part
of in the movie "The Light of Day," starring Michael J Fox. The song, very
cheesy.. called "True Love Ways". As a side note.. at the time, he was working
here in Cleveland at a local music shop. What was he? Keyboard salesman. =)

1l. "`caution: not for use with mono devices' : What does that mean?"

In all of NIN albums, there was some brilliant behind-the-scenes work done,
who knows what else he has hidden. If you route all channels into one, so
that the speakers play the music "in sync".. i.e. "mix" left and right so they
blend.. and then fuck with an EQ and Left/Right controls (it's really easy,
you just have to fuck with it.. A friend and I did it to his car stereo on
accident..) This is in effect taking only the sounds played in sync in phase
on both speakers at the same time, and playing it. you get totally different
"mixes" of the songs.. anything from a karaoke machine effect to hearing
instruments and voices you didn't hear before.

1m. "Didn't Trent sing with Tori Amos?"

Yes! He sang Backup Vocals in Tori Amos' "Past The Mission" on her
"Under the Pink" CD. Tori also is quoted saying TDS is one of her
favorites.. "I like to listen to this when I think the plane is
going to crash!"

1n. "What's with 'Natural Born Killers'?"

he (from my sources) did the entire mixing and production of oliver stone's
"natural born killers" movie. some 70+ songs have been sampled to make this
"sound collage", mixed by Trent and his Self Destruct tour band. songs included
are lou reed "sweet jane", l7 "shitlist", and his own: something i can never
have (pretty hate machine), a warm place (the downward spiral), and original
"burn".

1o. "Is Trent gay?"

Who cares?  I don't.  If he's gay, bi, straight, or whatever - it doesnt matter;
his music, his lyrics IMHO are all that count. However, in 9-94 Rolling Stone
Trent says, "I'm not as afraid to question my own sexual orientation as I might
have been ten years ago." There. Stop asking now.

1p. "Is Trent on the Internet?"

Trent? Are you out there?

=============================================================
PART TWO - DOWN IN IT (halo 1)
=============================================================

2a. "When was "Down In It" released?"

"Down In It" was released on 12" vinyl only in 1987. It was re-released on CD
maxi-singles and tape maxi-singles in 1992, after the runaway success of PHM.
Both releases have the same songs - the singe, shred and skin mixes. The
first two can also be found on the HLH CD single, the third is the version
that appears on PHM. Also available on the HLH single is a fourth mix of
"Down In It", called the "demo". The name leads some to believe that this
was the version he submitted to TVT in order to obtain his record contract.

2b. "What is the song about?"

Trent has said on many occasions that he's really
sick of people misintrepreting it (and about people misinterpreting his
lyrics in general off PHM) , and that it's NOT about a bad acid trip.
Some sources claim that the whole first album is about (surprise!) a bad
realtionship with a girl named "Chrissy". However, that might not apply to
"Down In It", since it was first released in 1987 and was probably written
some time before (unless it was a REALLY bad realationship that left him
writing about it two years later). Trent said about Down in it on stage
at a March 1994 NIN show in San Francisco: "Now here's a good song about
fucking.".. then playing down in it. Before starting on the song in the
boot Coming Down Fast, you hear "this is a song about sucking dick."

=============================================================
PART THREE - PRETTY HATE MACHINE (halo 2)
=============================================================

3a. "What's up with the extra lyrics that are printed with the
regular lyrics at the ends of some songs?"

The combined lyrics make up a poem, which was read at the end of
the demo version of Ringfinger, originally titled "Twist."
Others say they were parts of songs left out of the final mixes
(Perhaps both are true).. The words at the end of _ringfinger_
are in the demo mix, and you can hear "You know who you are" in
the Opal mix of HLaH.

3b. "Is the printing on the tape itself correct?"

The tape I bought was fine. The tape Ryan (skinslave@aol.com) bought
has the sides reversed. Given Trent's penchant for odd track numbering (all
euro NIN single-CD's have track numbers completely altered - so that the CD
plays the songs in the right order, but the number you see on the CD player is
incorrect).

3c. "What's the album cover a picture of?"

Again, differing theories:
a) A distorted view of the crown of the Statue of Liberty.
b) One source says that Trent (on Prodigy) said that the cover was a
circularsaw blade stretched out.
c) A picture of a turbine (aircraft engine).
d) A microphone. (imho most believable)

=============================================================
PART FOUR - HEAD LIKE A HOLE / SIN (halos 3+4, respectively)
=============================================================

4a. "What is the difference between the American and European releases?"

In the case of HLaH, there is one additional mix (the Opal mix) that
didn't make it to the American release. The UK version of Sin comes
in a black, instead of Red, case, but the track listing is the same.

=============================================================
PART FIVE - BROKEN (halo 5)
=============================================================

5a. "What the hell is wrong with my CD?"

Probably nothing. It's a long story. _Broken_ was released in the
following different forms:

        a. As the 5" CD with the six named tracks, enclosed with a smaller,
3" CD with the bonus tracks. Some very capitalistic record store owners
took the 3" out and sold it separately, which is why I believe production of
that particular kind was limited to the first pressing. Some information
leads me to believe that the 3" CD might also be called _Nothing_.
        b. As the 5" CD with tracks 1-6 as the normal songs, tracks 7-97
each one second long and blank, tracks 98-99 as the bonus tracks.
        c. As the 5" CD with tracks 1-6 as the normal songs and tracks 7 and
8 as the bonus stuff.
        d. As the 5" CD with only 1-6 being the normal songs, without the
bonus tracks entirely (a rip-off, IMHO). It is believed that this form is
the result of heinous record-store owners taking out the 3" to sell
separately.

I'm unsure of which version is being currently manufactured, so I can't say
exactly what is limited edition and what isn't, except for the first
pressing with the 3", which is definately limited. I'm told that Broken is
currently manufactured with the 1-6, 7-97, 98-99 format.

If, on the other hand, you purchased _Broken_ on cassette, the bonus tracks
are not listed on the liner notes or the casette itself except for the
writing credits which appear at the very end of the liner notes, and are
located on the second side.

If, on the third hand, you purchased _Broken_ on vinyl, my understanding is
that the EP itself (the six normal tracks) were on standard 12" vinyl, while
the bonus tracks were a white label 7".

The names of the bonus tracks are "Suck" and "Physical (you're so)" which
was originally written by Adam Ant.

5b. "Why were the two bonus tracks not included on _Broken_?"

Maybe because "Suck" was written during the contract dispute (as evidenced by
its appeaing the three years of touring) and he felt "Suck" to be a relic of the

second tracks 7/8 or 98/99.

5c. "Are there any singles off of _Broken_?"

Not singles as such, but promo CD's exist for "Happines in Slavery" and
"Physical". The former features more remixes by Adrian Sherwood, PK and
others, the latter features only the "mass-consumption" mix. There's also
a promo in existance for "Wish" that got sent to radio stations. This has
the "no dirty words" mix - not a remix per se, jus the original with the
music cut out for all the "fuck"'s.

=============================================================
PART SIX - FIXED (halo 6)
=============================================================

6a. "Is _Fixed_ a limited edition?"

Sorta. The Domestic printing was limited originally. Couple
things, however: A typical release of a "limited edition" of
anything would be 1000-2000 copies. For _fixed_, it's heard
that as many as 50,000 copies were released domesically. As
of lately, imports off Island/TVT have been proliferating the
mainstream stores. (Ugh.)

6b. "Why was it limited?"

There are a few theories. One holds that _Fixed_ was kept limited in order
to not interfere with the MTV-inspired success of _Broken_, and will be
re-issued in about a year as a non-limited.. it is now around import-wise..
Also, collectors LOVE limiteds. Also, maybe they just thought it wouldn't
sell well. It was also just a "single". All singles have limited runs..

6c. "Who does the remixes?"

Coil remixes "Gave Up"; Jim G. Thirwell (aka Clint Ruin, Foetus, etc.)
remixed "Wish" into "Wish (remix)" and "Fist Fuck"; Trent Reznor, Chris
Vrenna and Butch Vig remixed "Suck" and "Last" into "Throw This Away"; PK
remixed "Happiness in Slavery"; Reznor, Vrenna and a slew of others
mutilated "Happiness in Slavery" into "Screaming Slave" - kind of like
Skinny Puppy's "Download" with guitars... It's on the cover. =)

=============================================================
PART SEVEN - DOWNWARD SPIRAL/CLOSER/MoTP
=============================================================

7a. "Who did The Downward Spiral?"

Trent employed many talents in the creation of The Downward Spiral. Such
include Porno For Pyro/Jane's Addiction drummer Steve Perkins.. guitarist
Adrian Belew.. and God-like mixer Alan Moulder. Each contributed parts to
the works of Trent.

7b. "What's with the guitars and shit? This is different than ..."

In the words of Trent Reznor:

"I wanted (The Downward Spiral) to be a departure from Broken, where I wanted
to make a real hard-sounding record that was just one big blast of anger. Not
necessarily a well-rounded record...just one ultra-fast chunk of death. This
time I wanted to make an album that went in 10 different directions, but was all
united somehow. I didn't want to box NIN into a corner, where everything had to
be faster and harder than the last record..where every song had to say, ``Look
how tough we are.'' I don't think that's really me. ... On this record, I was
more concerned with mood, texture, restraint and subtlety, rather than getting
punched in the face 400 times. ... With broken, we wanted to make an album that
was just as thick and rich and layered as possible, so that if you listened to
it 3000 times, you'd hear a new musical element, a new guitar line every time.
With 'the downward spiral', we wanted to make a record that was full of holes."

7c. "Why did it take so long?"

Again, in the words of Trent:

"I tend to get bored when people start saying, ``Where's the record already?''
Hey, I'm not fucking off in there. It just takes a long time. Nirvana may
be able to make a record in two weeks. That's great. We're not doing that.
To me, every song means reinventing the whole process. There are no constants,
except maybe that I'll sing it. But are the rhythm tracks going to be played
or sequenced? Are they going to be real, fake, machines, drums, sounds, car
doors slamming? It's not a simple matter of yelling out chords to someone
across the room and starting the tape machine. It's a different situation.
I'm not saying that makes my record any better than theirs. It's just a diff-
erent set of parameters."

7d. "Is he working on another album?"

Yes, Trent does plan on working on another album after TDS, but don't look for
it for a while guys. He plans to start to work on ideas during his touring..
"Just to keep busy, and to approach it in a different way."

7e. "What singles off TDS are there?"

Post-spiral, there have been two singles - march of the pigs, and closer
to god. both have american and euro releases with no major track differences:
big man with a gun was included in the euro release of motp, and the cover
art is blue (instead of red/pink).. and :) the euro cd is exactly like 'tds'
cd, except: the silver is now red, and white-black. an eerie look imho.

7f. "Trent is all over. Whats up?"

If you've been keeping an eye out, you'll see Trent has been in a lot of
(major!) places recently - on part of The Crow soundtrack with original
"Dead Souls", and recently doing the entire soundtrack to Oliver Stone's
"Natural Born Killers", with *another* new one, radio top played "burn".

And, if you have too much time on your hands, you'll see trent's creativity
on the Natural Born Killers track, a phrase.. "nothing happens without help".
heh.

7g. "They're touring?"

Yep. He has a new band now---"Which is far superior to what I had in the
past. It's a new five piece, which is going to be pretty hard to pull off."
He plans to possibly use this band in writing his next album. None of the
bands he's been with have been a part of the music *writing*. With this one,

This FAQ is the product of dozens and dozens of peoples' help,
without them it wouldnt be half what it is now. If I listed them
all I'd have to have a separate damn FAQ, but below are the ones
who I'd like to thank :)

If you find any errors, ambiguities, omissions or the like, or have
something else to contribute, please email me. My new (yes, it's
real) email is jamie@life.sucks.com. I am on IRC as "gavroche".
