Re: Goofiness.

Just saw on the AANews mailing list where some Republican yahoo
(Thomas Colson <?> R-Oklahoma) admonished NBC for showing, unedited,
"Schindler's List". Got his panties all in a knot over
"full-frontal nudity, violence, and profanity".

Full-frontal nudity? Yeah, there's some, but it ain't like it's
portrayed as a gratuitous sex-romp. Far from it. Violence? What
does one _expect_ in a film about the Holocaust? Besides, violent
movies are on every _night_! Does he also get upset over Rambo and
Schwartzenegger flicks? If not, I'd like to know why he gets upset
over the portrayal of violence in Schindler's List. (And this movie
has a lot less gore than most movies; the B&W film style probably
helps with that, while still maintaining the actual horror of the
situation.) Profanity? I don't notice swearing all that much .. but
I don't remember much of it in List (and I missed the broadcast.)
Does anyone have any idea what he might be blathering about?

I disagree with the analysis given in the newsletter; I don't think
it was really the nudity that got him .. he's probably rather
anti-Semetic, or some sort of Holocaust denier (but too cowardly to
come out and say so.) I really can't see anyone, even the most
anal-retentive fundy, being all hot and bothered by the brief nude
scenes in this film. _I_ can't usually watch even mild, gratuitous
butt-shots (I get embarrassed and uncomfortable, even
about Kevin Costner's butt in Robin Hood. And I try to avoid Bruce
Willis movies, as I hear he really likes showing off his butt for
some reason.) but I had no problem at all with seeing camp inmates
being forced to undergo medical treatment, etc, with no clothes on.
I saw as much in the Time-Life series of books on WWII as a kid, and
worse. It's all in the context, I suppose.

Talk about beanheads. Sheesh. The movie may have left out quite a
bit (I read the book on which the movie is based after I saw it) but
it's still a damn fine, and important, work that kids SHOULD see, if
only to teach them how depraved people can be, and what the sowing
of irrational hatred can reap. But then, said representative
belongs to some sort of Christian "pro-family" group, so he probably
doesn't like to admit what hatred can do.
