     Court Rules on Abortion Protests

The U.S. Supreme Court has voted to uphold fixed restrictions that limit
protesters at clinics where abortions are performed. But the court also
struck down so-called ``floating buffer zones'' near the clinics as
unconstitutional, saying they violate free-speech rights. The high court
ruled on a New York case involving limits that required protesters to stay at
least 15 feet away from clinic doorways, driveways and entrances. The
variable zones required demonstrators to stay 15 feet away from anyone who
did not want to talk to them. But in the court's 26-page opinion, Chief
Justice William Rehnquist said the floating zones ``burden more speech than
is necessary to serve the relevant governmental interests.''
