Robert Lockard asked whether Behe has subjected his hypothesis to "the
best critical attention." There is no evidence that I can see that Behe
has presented his argument for intelligent design of biochemical systems,
or his theory of irreducible complexity, before any technical
organization. There is no separate bibliography in *Darwin's Black Box*,
although the notes list references. I see no reference to any paper by
Behe himself, nor do I recollect such a reference in the text. Insofar as
Behe has himself subjected his hypothesis to stringent criticism in the
text, I think that he has not done well. He answers arguments by Dawkins
and others, but he does not consider what they have, or might, argue
against his own hypothesis. Insofar as I, not a biochemist and only on a
hurried reading, found it easy to discover faults in his arguments, I
think that he cannot have subjected his own arguments to whatever
critical analysis he should have had the power to produce.
