The antiabortion movement is not satisfied with merely forcing
uncounted numbers of children to be born into wretched
conditions. Now one of them, Human Life International, also
seeks to prevent vaccination against diseases that kill many
every year, and will kill many more if this effort is successful.
So far HLI has completely disrupted tetanus vaccination programs
in Mexico and Nicaragua, and in the Philippines even managed to
convince a court to issue an injunction against the use of
tetanus vaccine. Such postnatal infections kill over 500,000
infants annually, the main vector is the mother, and vaccination
of these women is the only effective treatment in most of the
third world. So HLI launched a campaign to stamp out this
vaccination because tetanus vaccine had had antifertility drugs
added to it. This is an outright lie, but apparently live birth
is more important than survival afterward.

We err seriously if we dismiss those such as Paul Hill, the Presbyterian
minister who murdered an abortionist and his escort, as exhibiting
radically aberrant behavior. Religious fervor inspires violence; it will
spread and intensify as we approach the millenium.
