Dear AU/Atlanta Member/Supporter/Friend/Martian

As many of you may have read in today's Atlanta Journal Constitution, Clay
County school children got some extra reading material as they returned to
school. The school system has inserted a "disclaimer" insisting that
evolution is just a theory and since humans weren't around when life first
appeared on the earth there is no way to prove for certain its origins.

The disclaimer reads exactly like similar claims in creationist literature
and was clearly penned by one of their own.

This is an attempt by the small minority of Christian Fundamentalist kown as
"creationists" to discredit one of science's most well supported and
established principles. I have been doing quite a bit of research lately on
creationist literature and before might have considered it an alternative
for people of faith who felt uneasy about evolution. However, having read
much of their own ideas and the response from the legitimate science
community, a rational person can only come to one conclusion: it is real manure!

Some of the things held by "young earth" creationists:

Man and dinosaurs lived at the same time.

Every living plant and animal on earth is a direct descendant of the
occupants of Noah's ark.

The Earth is no more than 10,000 years old.

Any reading of their literature makes it painfully obvious that they are
nothing more than evangelicals trying to mask their proselytizing in
psuedo-science and pure misinformation.

The legitimate science community has squashed their every absurd notion.

Let me know if you'd like some excellent resources on creationism and I'll
point you to them.

In the meantime, contact the Clayton School System and let them know how you
feel. Phone and address information is below:
