Division 35 (Psychology of Women)

Division 35, Psychology of Women, is in some ways a microcosm of APA in that
it includes a balance of scientists, practitioners, and those specializing in
education and public policy. We recognize diversity in the life experiences of
our members and value the representation of that diversity throughout the
Division. There is a marvelous energy generated by interactions, for example,
between scientists and practitioners who share a common interest in the
psychology of women. The Division promotes and disseminates feminist research
related to women, diversity, and gender. It provides leadership in public
policy issues such as violence, women's health, education, women's employment,
and sexual harassment. Division 35 is among APA's largest divisions, reflecting
the prominence of women in research and practice in psychology.
Publications
The official journal of Division 35 is Psychology of Women Quarterly (PWQ),
begun in 1977 and published by Cambridge University Press. The editor is Nancy
Felipe Russo, PhD, of Arizona State University. PWQ is a feminist scientific
journal that publishes empirical research, critical reviews, theoretical
articles, brief repors, and invited book reviews related to the psychology of
women and gender.
Division 35 also publishes Psychology of Women Newsletter on a quarterly basis.
The editor is Janice D. Yoder, PhD, of the University of Wisconsin,
Milwaukee. The Newsletter contains current information on Division 35
activities, as well as happenings at APA that are of special interest to
women.
Division 35 has a book series that is published by APA. The series editor is
Cheryl Travis, PhD, of the University of Tennessee. The first book in the
series, Bringing Cultural Diversity to Feminist Psychology: Theory, Research,
Practice, edited by Hope Landrine, PhD, will appear shortly.
Special Interest Groups
Division 35 provides sections, committees, and task forces to support the
interests of our diverse membership. These include the Psychology of Black
Women; Feminist Professional Training and Practice; Lesbian Issues; The
Psychology of Hispanic Women; Asian American Women; Native American Women;
Prescription Privileges; and International and Global Perspectives.
Special Projects and Awards
- Division 35 sponsors an annual midwinter conference that carries continuing
education credits. The three most recent conferences were 'Feminist Psychology
and the Law'; 'Women's Voices, Women's Mental Health'; and 'Women's Bodies,
Women's Voices: Psychological Aspects of Women's Health.'
- Division 35 works closely with the APA Office on Women's Programs and the
Committee for Women in Psychology.
- Division 35 has been active in advocating for a national health care policy
that recognizes the special physical and mental health needs of women.
- Division 35 sponsors several awards, including the Carolyn Wood Sherif
Memorial Leadership Award; Research Award on Psychotherapy With Women; Geis
Scholarship for Graduate Students; and Graduate Student Award in Psychology
of Black Women.
- Division 35 sponsors continuing education workshops at the APA convention,
including the workshop, 'Teaching the Psychology of Women.'
Categories of Membership
Division 35 welcomes members from many backgrounds. Members, Fellows, and
Associates belong to the Division with corresponding statuses in APA.
Affiliate memberships are available to persons not belonging to APA. Student
affiliate memberships are available to graduate students and undergraduates.
All members receive PWQ and the newsletter.
