APA To Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of NIMH

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), APA, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Society for Neuroscience are sponsoring an exhibit for members of Congress and their staffs to inform them of the value of scientific research on mental illness and mental health. Through interactive displays and demonstrations, participating research universities, professional societies, and consumer organizations hope to inform members of Congress about current NIMH research on the brain, behavior, and mental health services. Participants will demonstrate the role of research in diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental disorders; the utility of research for enhancing service delivery systems; and the importance of funding by the National Institutes of Health for university and research institutes across the United States. Rep. John Porter (R-IL), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, is cosponsoring the event.

The reception and demonstration will take place on Wednesday, April 23, in the Cannon House Caucus Room. For more information, contact Paula Trubisky in the Public Policy Office [(202) 336-5585; e-mail pmt.apa@email.apa.org].
