The Women's Health Initiative (WHI)

A growing recognition of the importance of research on women's health led NIH to launch the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). WHI clinical trial and observational studies will include approximately 163,000 women, aged 50 to 79, at 40 clinical centers across the country. Thousands of others will participate in community studies. The WHI is investigating strategies for prevention of osteoporosis, heart disease, and breast and colon cancer.

Recruitment of participants began in the fall of 1993. The clinical trial will evaluate three preventive interventions: hormone replacement therapy to prevent heart disease and osteoporotic fractures, low-fat diet to prevent breast and colon cancer and heart disease, and calcium-Vitamin D supplementation to prevent osteoporosis and colon cancer.
