TPE Moves to Kalamazoo

From June 1 through September 1, 1996, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum in Kalamazoo, MI, will host APA's Traveling Psychology Exhibition (TPE), "Psychology: Understanding Ourselves, Understanding Each Other." The 75-year-old museum recently moved to a handsome structure that opened its doors on February 17, 1996. Spanning four levels and more than 60,000 square feet, the new facility features a planetarium, an interactive theater, a preschool area, and participatory exhibits that reflect the museum's broad collection of objects and artifacts from the fields of science and history.

Since its February opening, the museum has been attracting over 20,000 visitors a month, a figure that has exceeded all expectations. Museum staff and administration are looking to the Psychology Exhibition with its attendant public programs to continue attracting crowds throughout the summer. The museum has operated since 1991 as a part of the Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and professors from its psychology department will be taking the lead in organizing local psychologists to serve as advisors to the museum in developing public programming, recruiting volunteers, and assisting with fund-raising.

The Psychology Exhibition was developed and produced by APA and the Ontario Science Centre with generous assistance from the National Science Foundation, the W. T. Grant Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, Harvard University, and the National Institute of Mental Health. The exhibition tour is managed by the Association of Science-Technology Centers.
