Psychology Exhibition Travels to Cleveland

The fall 1996 venue for the Traveling Psychology Exhibition will be The Health Museum of Cleveland. The Exhibition will open there in early October and will close January 15, 1997.

The first of its kind and one of only two in the United States, The Health Museum has provided health information in a museum setting for more than 50 years. Museum planners from around the world visit the Cleveland museum to study the unique health focus of its exhibits and education programs.

Incorporated in 1936 by a group of physicians, dentists, and community members, the purpose of the museum was 'to educate the public in matters pertaining to health.' The museum houses over 150 exhibits on how the human body works, including components on sensation and perception, the brain, reproduction, and nutrition.

In 1952, a Youth Education Center was added. The museum currently provides health education classes to elementary and middle school students in the Cleveland area and serves 100,000 visitors annually.

As at other sites, psychologists from local associations and from area colleges and universities are working with museum staff to promote the exhibition, recruit volunteers, and plan public programs.

The Traveling Psychology Exhibition was developed and produced by APA and the Ontario Science Centre with generous assistance from the National Science Foundation, the W. T. Grant Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, Harvard University, and the National Institute of Mental Health. The exhibition tour is managed by the Association of Science-Technology Centers.
