Rep. Robert Walker Throws Fuel on the National Science Foundation (NSF) Flames

Reiterating the disturbing language found in the House budget report, Rep. Robert Walker (R-PA) was quoted as saying at a news conference on May 11 that the social, behavioral, and economic studies at NSF were fields that NSF had 'wandered into . . .[to be] politically correct.' Because Rep. Walker is Chair of the House Science Committee that authorizes NSF, a top Republican on the House Budget Committee, and part of the House Republican leadership, his remarks are strong indicators of Republican plans for the behavioral and social sciences at NSF.

APA, in collaboration with other behavioral and social science organizations, is working hard to change Rep. Walker's opinion of the behavioral and social sciences at NSF and to ensure support for the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences in the FY 1996 appropriations legislation and the upcoming NSF authorization bill.
